There are not many anglers with the tuna fishing experience of John Nappo owner of Trophy Tackle. John has fished many long range tuna trips on the west coast and knows the best rig to use when chunking for tuna.

I know this is somewhat late to the I fished large yellow fin tuna off of southern Mexico for over 20 years and on ALL of my crimped rigs I used PTFE electrical wire sleeves for anti-chaffing of the hook and swivel loop. It stops the "Crotch Breaks" 100% (never once did I have a failure since using the sleeves). The increased stiffness of the loop allows the hook to swing more freely (added bonus). There are 3 sizes that are perfect for 80 to 200 lb mono. They can be ordered on-line from McMaster-Carr (in Santa Fe Springs, CA). The part numbers are: 5335K15 (.047" ID - 80-100 lb mono/fluor); 5335K16 (.053" ID - 135 lb mono/fluor); 5335K17 (.066" ID - 150-200 lb mono/fluor). All three sizes can be ordered in 10, 25, 50 and 100-foot rolls. 25 ft of each size should last at least a decade. Cut them into 1 1/8" for the 80-100, 1 1/4" for the 135 and 1 3/8" for 150-200. They don't add much to the diameter of the rig, are a translucent clear (similar to fluor) and WORK. Also, DO NOT use the barrel swivels ONLY. By-the-way....ALWAYS heat and mushroom the tag end exiting the solid backup against slippage. Slippage that does not occur on test equipment in a shop DOES NOT reflect the real world as water is a very good lubricant and some slippage will eventually occur. I have noticed a few of my rigs have slipped up to the mushroom end after a prolonged fight with a heavy fish.

Interesting running only five feet of flouro. I liked a longer section so I could grab below the swivel. These days I run wind ons unless we're into really large Tuna then I splice 130lb flouro directly to my hollow core. I'll run the flouro a good 10' or more into the hollow. Never understood people splicing 2-3 feet when it takes a minute to splice 10'. I still like 20-25' of flourocarbon as my wind on.

Wouldn’t Snelling the circle hook to the Fluro eliminate the crotch breaks you mentioned?

When you are chumming for giant Bluefin Tuna is it also ok to fish either snap swivel?

The only thing I don't like is his choice of swivels. I've found those spro swivels do NOT prevent line twist....You might consider upgrading to a $5 swivel

Why 80? Lots of times they don't bite heavier than 50 unless you need that for bluefin or something

Lol that crimp tool is the same as sealine. Exact same to the wire cutter and mono cutter on the side. $45 at turners

Why not just tie a good knot instead of crimp? What am I missing? The knots I tie are stronger than the string. Its like a good weld will not break before the material you are welding. The string will break before the knot or the crimp. Why risk a over cfimped line that could break when a knot will do better? I think alot of fishing has become over marketed. Spend more, spend more.
