Words can't express how powerful this scene is to me.

The writing in this scene is brilliant. Not only the Rain Man reveal but also the reaction to the hot water gives us incredible insight into Raymond's feelings that he struggles to express. Even though he didn't see Charlie for several decades, he never forgot about his little brother and never stopped loving him, and here he finally gets closure from the trauma of the burning incident and is able to see that Charlie is unharmed, prompting him to repeat "never hurt Charlie Babbitt, " which is clearly a mantra he has been saying to himself since that horrible day, as it brings out his natural protective brotherly instinct. Raymond is just as human and capable of love as anyone else.

As someone who has an older brother with autism, this just hits different. The love and the struggle between the two is raw and real.

Hoffman was already well-regarded as a method actor. But this was his most disciplined performance ever: he spent a year studying autism to make sure his performance was right.

All of a sudden, Charlie's entire life makes sense. The "imaginary friend" was the brother he never knew he had. His father's resentment makes sense because they had to put Raymond away. In a few minutes, his entire perspective on the world changes.

Dustin Hoffman perfected the movements and mumbles. He studied hard for this part.

I have an autistic child and cry when i see this scene. My son, however, is non-verbal but this scene still breaks my heart. That poor father had just lost his wife and he did the best he could to ensure that both boys had the best possible life even if it meant sending one away. I am so glaf Charlie sees why his father left everything to Ray - it was his way of making up for the inequity he committed in life after his death.

Look at how good an actor Cruise is with the right film and director. He fully holds his own with Hoffman and that cannot be easy.

Hoffman, undoubtedly, is one of the finest actors ever to grace the screen.

This scene is a total tear-jerker. The gravity of everything hitting Charlie's conscience. And no need for any music. It just slams the audience like a ton of bricks. Amazing piece of cinema

Everyone is talking about Tom Cruise in the comments, yet you have to say that Dustin Hoffman's performance really makes the scene.

The scene was cut right before I think what was the most emotional specific part of the movie. When Tom Cruise is sitting at the edge of bed and realizes Raymond is his brother and not just another person.
