The example $2k laptops you have shown may have a 4080 in it, but may sacrifice on other factors (screen quality, plastic vs aluminium chassis, fan noise, battery life, etc) that affects the overall creative workflow experience.

Not to forget, some manufacturers limit the GPU in a Windows laptop due to thermals. They throttle even further when running on battery. Whereas it maintains consistent speeds on a MacBook even on battery.

Yeah, macs still leave a lot to be desired in the 3D and gaming department. Have you tried any games through parallels or crossover/GPTK?

Unplugged laptops unfortunately aren't fully there yet for rendering work matching desktop GPU, however my solution was simply just getting a decent laptop with long battery life and just remotely connecting into my PC. Works surprisingly well even on a 5G hotspot in a busy area.

Why is there no "Metal RT" option in the Render settings in Preferences? I think if you fix this, the render will speed up.

When I look at upgrading my GPU vs buying an entire high end laptop and once you factor in power consumption and all other supporting components a M3max seems comparably affordable as long as the thermals stay low enough not to throttle too much.
