8TB of SPACE! Wow, this is a huge hard drive, and a fast one... inside this WD My Book is actually a high end WD Red NAS drive, for $250 it is a heck of a deal for tons of space!

In this video, I'll unbox it, talk about the features and show you how it hooks up, then run a performance test on it to show you what to expect.

WD My Book 8TB

The other two sizes I suggest depending on your needs:

WD My Book 6TB

WD My Book 4TB

---

I have also reviewed this drive in another video where I test 5 different drives against each other:

Great review, purchased a WD 4TB & 1TB portable HD based on your discussion, very happy with both.

Please I need an answer?
Does the drive shuts it self down after you shut down your computer?

8:41 The space is also lower due to the actual formatting of the drive, itself

Thanks, your data intensive, hi-res video…it looked SO crisp on my display ;-) -- am looking to choose a 10TB drive for archiving.
Am a HDD tech enthusiast dating back to my first ever drive—a 1988, superbly engineered masterpiece--a Miniscribe 3053 with three big 5.25 inch platters, a very cool rotary voice coil actuator, and capability for users to lay down either a 40 or 60 megabyte low-level-format, depending on the encoding of the HDD controller board installed in the 16 bit slots. The very easily heard, lovely sounds that the 6-headed actuator made are what I most miss in today’s silent drives (no embedded servo or translation back then either--one of the six heads, and one platter surface, were dedicated to the servo alignment tracks, and so excluded user data).
Thanks for your enjoyable review. Am hoping to recapture some magic of the old 3053 with the astonishing capacity, cylinder, platter and head counts now required in the current crop of 10TB MONSTERS!

Another awesome video. Any chance of doing anything about keyboards (for gaming and for general use) ? I know many people that bought expensive mechanical keybords and ending up replacing them (after the hype and enthusiasm died out) with cheap ones because they could not stand the noise (good luck trying to stream with all that clicky-click for 4 hours) so a video for the best keyboards up to 20 bucks would be awesome.

Great review, so does the drive shuts it self down after you shut down your computer?

Good video but I would have liked to have to know the power use and especially whether it shuts itself down when the pc is switched off.

Thanks for the review. I’m in the market to buy a large external hdd to consolidate my games, movies etc from my various small portable drives ... looks like this WD MyBook 8 tb is just perfect. Large enough to consolidate and more performance too ! How is it running 1 year later ? Any issues ?

Hi thank you for this. I have been looking for a video that showed the real performance of this drive. Was wondering your thoughts on configuring this drive in a RAID 0 with software RAID? I had looked at the Seagate and they recommend against it. Currently I have three RAID 0 setups. Two are 3TB WD that are great and run well over 100MB/s. Last year I created a new one using the 5TB My Books from WD and they are now running really slow. About 60MB/s. They are all formatted for Mac and were created using SoftRAID. I use one RAID for my video work, one for my photo work and the 5TB is a archive RAID of older work. Thanks for any thoughts and great video.

Then slower read/write speeds. The product is better used as a backup of your PC.

Very useful video, I am considering buying one. I read on Amazon that some users complained about this external hard drive being too noisy even when idle. Do you have any opinion about it? Do you know anything about the 10TB hard drive? Thanks!

I solute you man for the awesome review: professional explaining, excellent testing and neat unboxing... not to mention the richness of details... so thanks a lot mate, keep up the good work (you have my subscription 😉)...
as for the hdd itself, frankly I have two questions to ask you, will I notice any lag or slowness should I play a heavy game off it? I know you've sayed in your video that playing bf4 in this my book will be better than on a portable hdd, but what I wanna know is there any deference between it and the internal normal hdds regarding videogames' performance??
secondly, is it possible that you have an hgst helium hdd inside this enclosure (because I've read in an article that WD actually has put some of these ultrafast helium hdds in the early models of this 8tb my book)...

Thanks for the video! I am looking to use the drive to edit large photo files in photoshop. Do you know if this drive would be suitable for this?

I'm a bit shocked at how much space the raw video format takes up for such a short amount of video.
