Do Catholics Re-Crucify Jesus During Mass?

If the Mass is a sacrifice, doesn't that mean Catholics are crucifying Jesus over and over again? Catholic apologist Karlo Broussard explains how this common Protestant objection misunderstands what's really happening during Mass.

Karlo holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in theology from Catholic Distance University and the Augustine Institute, and is currently working on his masters in philosophy with Holy Apostles College and Seminary. He also worked for several years in an apprenticeship with nationally known author and theologian Fr. Robert J. Spitzer at the Magis Center of Reason and Faith.

Karlo is one of the most dynamic and gifted Catholic speakers on the circuit today, communicating with precision of thought, a genuine love for God, and an enthusiasm that inspires.

Jesus is our High Priest forever, who has ascended into heaven and is outside of time, in eternity. Thus, through the Mass, the one complete sacrifice of Jesus becomes present (through earthly ministerial priests) across all times and places. God bless, friends!

I’ve heard this explained several times with several different people and this is the first time it clicked and made sense. Thank you Catholic Answers!!!

Isn't there kind of a begging the question sort of thing going on? If the Roman Catholic perspective is wrong, then you're praying over bread, which isn't re-crucifying Jesus. If the Roman Catholic perspective is correct, then it's the official position that they don't re-crucify.

Wasn’t it the Pope Innocent Iii claim transubstantiation was truth for the first time in the 1200’s? And doesn’t the mass sacrifice give grace to dead and living Christians to keep them out of purgatory? That means it IS the same sacrifice. So when was the mass introduced? Christ offered His sacrifice ONCE for all. You cannot assume that the mass has anything to do with justification or sanctification, but because the RCC does teach exactly that, there is no difference then. It is a huge stretch and a poor attempt to differentiate the two by calling one a bloody sacrifice (which would be pretty hard to replicate) and the other an unbloody one. It’s as if to say they aren’t the same by that minor difference.

Hebrews 2:17 therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people.

Where does Hebrews say He needs to sacrifice in an unbloody manner?

Boy, the ignorance of many on this question is amazingly sad. No, He is not. We are at the "1" sacrificial crucifixion of our Lord, when He took upon Himself our sins to give us eternal life. We're at the foot of the cross every mass, at Calvary. There is no continued crucifying of our Lord, it was a 1-time death, accepted by God on its intention. What we do continue upon Christ is continuing to sin and inflicting even more wounds upon Him. That is heartbreaking, the uncaring nature of billions hurting Jesus daily - how great is His love we have not been pulverized into nothingness.

Everybody crucifies Jesus over and over, He died for the sins of everybody, believer and not believer. Now, He is coming back in glory and his wounds will be healed when his mystical body is back to him in sanctity and peace. But as long as sin continues to increase, our Lord will continue to suffer. The Devotion of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ says it all, it is for these times.

When protestants say that. One question comes to mind. Do protestants believe the Eucharist is Jesus in the flesh?

But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, Hebrews 10.12

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.
“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi, ’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father, ’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted".
(Matthew 23 NIV)

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything, in Heaven above or in the Earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents up to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
"If my people who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and will heal their land."

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,  who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

This, then, is how you should pray:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

These are the teachings,
The Righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ our God.
REPENT, and start doing what is right.
If you abide my teachings, you are really my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

A time is coming and has now come, that the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. God is Spirit, so his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and Truth; they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

In the New Heaven and New Earth,
only Righteousness dwells.
May the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ our God be with you all.

If you read the epistle to the church in Corinth, you'll notice that the Apostle Paul did not write the word 'thusia' but rather 'anamnesis '

I am a little confused. I thought the Eucharist was the literal body and blood of Christ. If so how is the Mass not bloody? Does that mean the Eucharist isn't the blood of Christ?

Okay so please someone (Catholic) respond. [for your info, i’m a protestant who is indecisive on this matter] The only thing seperating mass and Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross is that it isn’t the bloody sacrifice. But what about the blood miracles happening around the world. The one distinction (the bloody part) is even done away with so it is basically synonimous now.

if it’s unbloody, it’s not Jesus’s real actual blood. If it’s Jesus real blood, it’s pouring out jesus’s blood again (re-sacrifice) and therefore bloody. If its only a re presentation of the sacrifice.. that’s the protestant position.. a representation of the sacrifice of shed blood. Catholics fail every time when pressed on these points. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

I think the relevant question would not be whether Catholics re-crucify Jesus during mass (obviously they don't) but whether there is a sense in which the sacrifice of Christ's crucifixion is offered back to God -- in other words, what exactly do Catholics mean by "the sacrifice of the mass?"

The other video I just saw said it was. This older one says it's not.
