A free trade agreement between the UK and Japan has been secured in principle.

The International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said it is Britain’s first major deal as an independent trading nation and it will increase commerce with Japan by an estimated £15.2 billion.

The UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement was agreed in principle by Truss and Japan’s foreign minister, Motegi Toshimitsu, in a video call on Friday.

Truss said: “This is a historic moment for the UK and Japan as our first major post-Brexit trade deal.

We already had a deal with Japan in the EU, this is tiny compared to the trade we're gonna lose with Europe.

it's the same agreement UK had in the EU at the 90% ... the rest are all Japan's benefits

I love Japan and I regularly buy imported goods from there at over-inflated prices. This should mean cheap imports from one of the coolest countries on the planet. Yay!

I bet the value of the UK-Japan trade deal comes to nowhere near the value of the EU-Japan trade deal let alone exceed it (it's most likely 1/20th of the EU's trade deal with Japan), so the EU are not so desperate for the money from the UK for the whole of the £39.6bn divorce payment it has to pay in full by law for leaving the EU just to stay afloat.

The EU probably not desperate for the whole of the £39.6bn from the UK's divorce payment paid in full evrn without their trade deal with Japan. The EU have big value trade deals with the rest of the world anyway.
