Stormgate Early Access Review

As a competitive RTS, Stormgate is what's next. Or at least, I hope it is. It pushes that classic basecraft formula forward with a veteran's eye for what works and what doesn't, and gets me pumped to queue up again right after I finish a match – win or lose – in a way I haven't been since the early days of Wings of Liberty. If I were judging it only based on that, it would get high marks already. But the short, low-rent campaign is less than inspiring, leaving one of its major factions entirely without context and retreading very familiar narrative ground. However, it's rounded out with an exciting co-op mode that features some cool heroes and offers a nice entry point to anyone who doesn't want to leap straight into the jaws of 1v1 matchmaking. For Early Access, Stormgate is pretty promising when it lays all its cards on the table. But it still has miles to go.

My question is, why not just keep playing StarCraft 2?

For every thing it has from SC2, there's an even more important one that it doesn't, and Stormgate has mostly been better off for it. Specially regarding hyper-mobility, AoE burst damage and unit clumping in deathballs. I'm looking forward to coop and 3v3 modes, since they don't seem to be an afterthought like they were in SC2.

Not at all sure there is as big a market for "competitve rts" as for a single player rts that can be played multiplayer. Age of Empires 4 failed as a single player game, which hurts its longevity and long-term sales.

Gameplay in every mode is Fantastic even in its unfinished state ! The devs just pushed to EA way too early - but they have already delivered great gameplay. High confidence all rough edges will be smoothed out in a year. Either way, I'm loving this as is now
