I just figured they use the monkey paw as a reference from the Simpsons who took it from the twilight zone who probably took it from a book or short story. The monkey paw grants wishes, if you remember in the Simpsons episode they got rid of all the weapons for peace so the aliens invaded but in the end Ned Flanders saved the day.

No it is only there for refrence that they tried to control it like they did the aliens but once gordy got his instincts he attacked just like when the aliens git angry he started attacking(this is an edit i am not trying to be angry i am just stating it for no confusion)
