There is a psychological reason that could impact a fight

Seeing hundreds of lasers or bolts flying around you is gonna make you wanna keep your head down

Supply lines could be another

The 40k Imperial guard use lasguns because they're very easy to resupply ammo for, any power supply can recharge them, and even throwing them on a fire works

Variable intensity of a laser could be another reason, being able to fire hundreds of weak lasers or a dozen strong lasers depending on what the situation needs

You're right, it could cause a lot of collateral damage. So we use orbital laser strikes instead, because there's no such thing as collateral damage if everything is the target.

No clean up either so it's eco-friendly.
