Fun fact: People saying that helmets back then were designed to stop shrapnel and not bullets are slightly off. It depended on the army, but the Germans when designing their helmets, actually wanted to make them heavier and provide protection against bullets to the point of stopping rounds.

The issue is that rifle calibers back then were absolutely gigantic, and for a helmet designed in WW1 to be pitted against an 8-round semi-auto .30-06 spewer was just overwhelming, especially at the closer ranges they fought in as opposed to trading shots in trenches where only a small part of your body was exposed.
