Fooly Cooly Season 1 In A Nutshell

With seasons 2 and 3 coming next year, I think its a good time to look back at the season that started it all so many years ago. Theres obviously more to this excellent and short anime (I mean this video is pretty much just 1 minute per episode), so be sure to go find the series itself and check it out!

Here's the thing that bothers me about Fooly Cooly. I mean it's clearly a coming of age story, right? And clearly Naota starts to grow throughout the plot, but it just kind of... ends. I mean in a practical real world sense, of course Haruko isn't going to be interested in a romance with a 12-year-old boy, but this is fiction, and it works of fiction, everything, every little detail, has significance. Haruko stats that Naota is still a kid, implying that even though he's grown past being the shadow of his elder brother, he still has room to grow. Then why is it, when we finally seem to be seeing a season 2 and 3 of FLCL, that the perspective and protagonist changes to someone else? Granted, we can assume Naota has now been steered onto the path of finally growing up, and that more or less is resolved in a sense. Even if we don't see Naota's transition into an adult, we can probably confer he's going to do alright, but it leaves so many questions about the over-arching plot. I personally wouldn't be surprised if season 2 takes place about a decade into the future. I can only hope we see Naota's return, and really see some resolutions to the rest of the plot of FLCL from another character(s) perspective. There's still so much to explain. I know a lot of it didn't need to be explained or resolved. Medical Mechanica clearly represents big corporate, and Atemus' symbolization represents what-the-fuck-ever, and while their existence and future legacies don't necessarily have jack shit to do with Naota's growth, I would definitely like to see their respective fates expanded on in the seasons. Although I guess the mystery behind these things are just part of FLCL's charm. That said I'm glad we're gonna see more FLCL because the first season in of itself seems unfinished besides Naota's personal story.
