The Goofiest Space Experiment In History
Показать описание
This is the story of one of the goofiest space experiments I've ever heard of: The Tethered Satellite System Space Missions (TSS-1R).
Thanks for watching!
There was so much cool information that I had to cut because it got too complicated, but it's bugging me so I'm going to write some of it here. Space tethers have other applications apart from power generation. One is tether propulsion. Instead of moving a wire through a magnetic field, if you hold it still, and run a current through it instead, it experiences a force. You can use this force to change the orbit of your spacecraft. So it's basically a propulsion system. Very cool. This has actually been tested and proven in other missions (PMG, etc.)
The sequel mission TSS-2 was planned but never went ahead. There's no official reason why, but I'd assume it was because of the two previous failures. It's a shame because the failures weren't due to the tether functionality itself, and the data NASA collected actually showed that it worked.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed the video, and if you read through all this gibberish, let me know by commenting: Doggo for President :)
