Everything changes so the speed of light can remain constant. That's kinda terrifying

Thank you for saying "relative to the cosmic background radiation". Most people just say "moving such and such miles per second" and that's incomprehensible without a frame of reference

"Time and length change in order to keep the speed of light constant"

Damn physics really got its priorities messed up.

Since location is always relative, Einstein once asked the conductor "What time does Oxford arrive at this train?"

Moral of the story: So long as you can keep the lights on, you're going to be okay.

When a cop pulls you over, and asks if you know how fast you were going, just say 627 KM/S relative to the background cosmic radiation!!

Thanks for simplifying the theory of relativity down to a point where I could actually understand it.

It's insane shit that Einstein figured out length and time change just because the speed of light is constant. He was truly very very intelligent

People say lazy but im literally moving 627 km/s

I always wished someone would give a simple, easy to understand description of this topic. Now that he has, I realize I legitimately am hopelessly stupid.

This is the best way I’ve ever heard relativity explained in simple terms

Michelson and Morley experiment is the most important and most revolutionary "failed" experiment in the history of physics IMO. And the LIGO experiment being basically the same setup but to measure a different thing and being a success so great that we couldn't even imagine it, before turning it on, makes it all so poetic I could cry every time I think about it.

This is the first time I’ve truly understood the theory of relativity

I always use this experiment as a shining example as to why any result is a result, even the null result. Whatever the outcome of an experiment, so long as it was well designed, it is important and worth publication.

Just a friendly correction from a physicist: when you say "relative to the cosmic microwave background", you can't actualy use light as a frame of reference due to relativity, because it doesn't work, infinity quantities would arise.

Newton believed that we could use "fixed stars" as an absolute frame of reference, because people didn't know back then about the expansion of the universe. So it would be more adequate to analyse the motion of the solar system relative to the milky way, and if you want to go further, you must take as a frame of reference another specific galaxy or star, I suppose.
