Kilauea Volcano Eruption, Lava Bursts From Summit Crater (June 7, 2023)

HAWAIʻI VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - Kīlauea began erupting lava at the summit early Wednesday morning.

On the first night of the 1969 eruption some friends and I drove up there, snuck off the road and as close to the caldera and lava fountains as we could get; ultimately a State Police officer found us and made us hike back out on the narrow and overgrown trail we came in on through the forest. An experience of a lifetime, and I can still feel the heat and hear the deafening roar similar to standing next to a jet airliner engine.

Because of the multiple fountains erupting across the crust cap I would speculate a tremendous amount of pressure had built up under the crust before fracturing in multiple places and releasing the magma! What a show of power! It had to be a pretty thick basalt cap as it has been weeks since any material had oozed out of any cracks or vents giving it lots of time to cool off and harden.🌋🙂

Even if evacuation by sea had to happen miles of parked cars to get to boats would happen. Likely best to look at channeling and blocking to direct flows threatening areas. The no messing with lava flows with water doesn't seem practical when it's that many persons livelihoods.

After the eruption is over do they send firefighters to put out the remaining fires or do they just let them burn themselves out?
