But did you know that you could be putting those twists onto your reel?

This may be happening when you are spooling your spinning reel with braided line.

And there's a simple trick to prevent this from happening.

So in this video, you'll learn how to properly spool your spinning reel to avoid line twists.

It seems there are multiple ways to do this. This method of unwinding from the face, the method Luke showed of unrolling from the spool, the pro shop machine reel loader, and they make a handheld line winder device that spins the reel as you unroll it. There are also various other methods people have mentioned here. Sounds like Salt Strong might want to make a comparison video of the different methods and how they compare the first few times you cast off of the reel..

I wish I had done this last time I loaded a reel, nothing but wind knots. I will use this method next time.

So just a helpful add on, If you get line twist once you are using the rod cut everything off the line except maybe the leader and drag the majority of the spool behind your boat for a while to allow the line to "untwist" under the water pressure and then reel it in under that same water pressure and it will spool back up nicely and should fix this issue for quite some time. I got into a habit of occasionally doing each of my rods while heading out and back in and then I usually avoid these problems for the most part. Understand certain rigs are just going to twist line eventually no matter what you do but this tip will help solve this issue and extend your fishing enjoyment.

Always done it this way. I dont know if I need a mono backing anymore...have no troubles with putting the braid throughout the spool...🙄

Am I the only person that fills a 5 gallon bucket and throws the spool in and then starts spooling my reels? Never have a twist in Polymer or Braided lines.

The way I found easiest was to get a thin bolt that will go through the hole in the spool. Then I get a properly-sized to the bolt wing nut and tighten it so the bolt is securely tightened and there won't be any wobble when I chuck it in my battery operated drill. I put a pencil through the spool of braid, secure it between my knees, and use a damp paper towel to put tension on the braid and guide it on to the spool as I advance the speed of the drill. No twists at all using this method.

Interesting video. I always thought one needed to put tension on the line so that the line would not be as likely to bury itself in the spool. I am guessing Tony was holding the line with fingers. I don't see how that could put enough tension on the line while spooling. I agree with others that believe more testing is needed since there seem to be so many ways to spool line. And yes spooling the line is very important. Just my thoughts.

thank u tony.luke showed in salt strong other video that he make sure the line go off strait so the lable side does not matter.

I always just threw the spool on the ground and went with it. Never had a problem

What were you using to keep tension on the line?

🤔 I seem to recall a video that Luke put out saying the opposite of this. 🤣 Ask 10 fishermen and get 10 answers. 👍👍👍😁. That being said Id love to see Luke breakdown and test line spooling techniques including the spooling tools on the market. I can't say enough good things about all of the contributions the Salt Strong crew has done to not only entertain me but to educate and improve my enjoyment of the greatest family friendly pastime. Fishing🎣 👍👍Tight lines to all.

I have a few spools of mono that are spooled " backwards ".
Just make sure it is coming off counter clockwise.
Also, if you try to full spool fluorocarbon it will spring off no matter what.

Luke demonstrated a different way. Which way is correct?

interesting, Luke did a video to make the opposite point. From his video I did try to have it come off with the spool perpendicular to the reel the last time i spooled my Van Staal reel and i keep having the line loop around the rod tip as I'm using a spook, or anytime i change a plug. I know its an issue but i don't want to replace the line i just put on there (~$30 for 300yds), anyone know an other way to re orient the line on the reel?

What are the pro and cons of using a bucket of water and dropping the spool in and reeling in?

In my work area I have some two sided sticky tape to help hold the spool to the table because sometimes it can bind and will jump and roll away.

If you have to Flipp the spool multiple times then you are not avoiding line twist.

…and Luke puts braid on from the top like I do. The line “twists” its way on and come off flat and straight. I have much fewer wind knots spooling up this way.

Luke Simon said don't do it this way on another video. He recommends putting a pencil/screw driver through the center of the line spool and letting the line come off vertically overhead while the line spool spins. I also agree with this latter method as ive had some of my Penns spooled with powerpro for as long as 4 years and never had windknots on those reels.
