Sourwood Bow Drill Friction Fire In The Woods

I wanted to make this Bow Drill video in the woods using only "on the spot" materials. I went in with my Corona folding saw, it's paracord lanyard, and my Mora Companion SS. It's been several days since it has rained and 7 years ago when I was last here, there were plenty of great materials to be had.
I found plenty of materials in about 20 minutes. I found a big flat piece of tree for a fire table, a fatwood stump for the bearing block, Tulip Poplar tinder, Tulip Poplar bow, and Sourwood for the spindle and fire board. It was all clear sailing from there.

Just watched your previous video again, done my first fish tail weave. I was so proud I showed my wife, she said it was lovely but somehow I don't think she is as impressed as I am. The TUT and the roll of the eyes said more than words ever could.🤣🤣🇬🇧👍

David, I never get tired of learning from your videos. Due to your teaching, I've developed skills sets that have made me much more knowledgeable, productive, and successful as well as patient with myself in fire making. Many Thanks, Friend ! Keep em' coming !

I really like your found materials videos. Realistically, that is the only way I would be using a bow drill. In a real survival situation I would be using my lighter in my EDC pocket contents. That does not let me off the hook for practicing the other methods. Mr. West, you are the Yoda of fire making. Thank you for continuing to teach and encourage us.

Well David, I always find what you show on your videos to be extremely relaxing. This one was no exception. Thank you for putting it up.

That was gorgeous! Walking into the woods, gathering materials and starting a fire. You must have had excellent humidity conditions to allow that to work without having to wait 4 hours for the tinder and hearth board to dry out.

You know, I certainly learned what little I know about this subject from watching your videos. One problem that I ran into though, was that using my thumb to tighten the cordage led to me getting some damage to the skin under my thumb. Basically, I used a bow drill every day for a few months last year and a big knot grew under the skin of the knuckle on my thumb. To avoid this, I came up with an alternate technique for holding the bow -- instead of tightening it with my thumb, I rotate the bow so that the drill touches the wood of the bow -- since the bow is moving forward and backward and the drill is spinning the same direction, it keeps the cordage separated to prevent wearing. The cordage lasted for months that way.

I have greatly benefited from your demonstrations, thank you so much!

Everything from scratch! I particularly enjoyed this video. Love the idea of the same source wood for both spindle and fire board. THANKS! Good job Good Sir.

Oh, yeah-right now the auto translate feature is only available on desk top, not mobile apps. I can only see that option under settings on my desktop, but not my iphone or ipad.

Another great video. I'm interested to know if your views and subscriptions will go up from the recent roll out of the auto translate feature. I watched a captioning video a year ago that said if a video has both subtitles and closed captioning it receives 80% more views, and closed captioning alone increases views by 40%. If that's true your channel will receive many more views and subscribers.
