Dude, add some insight. It's not simple failure bad, rpe 8 good.

Some movements leaving reps in the tank is a bad idea (most upper body).

Rpe 8-9 works better on lower body and lengthen biased exercises.

Also, pretty much everyone without a few years of mindful training will get their rpe wrong. Therefore working to failure a a valuable teaching strategy.

Anecdotally, I could reverse your story 180 degrees. My 2nd bout of growth happened when I started going to failure and beyond failure on most upper body lifts instead of leaving 2 reps in the tank.

Note I'm talking about hypertrophy. Strength indeed will improve faster when not going to failure too much.

Training to failure for more worked better when I was doing Mentzer style training. Even then, with frequency I don’t go to failure intentionally anymore.

Edit: I’ve been cutting and kept power everywhere except for bench. I’ve been going to near failure on bench so with this video I’m planning on dialing back the weight. full body 3x per week with arm emphasis on day 3

Training to failure can definitely work but you need several rest days per week with that approach, especially if natty.

My opinion also, this train to failure BS is madness.

Training to failure recruits the most fast twitch fiber. It’s the best way but you have to rest usually a week before hitting it again. Your gains will be much better in the long run. The Henneman Size Principle. Known for decades. The problem is that people think increased volume and frequency is necessary. It’s not. Look up Dr. Ralph Carpinelli’s work.
