Have you been to Lisbon? It’s an incredible food city. And recently we launched our first Devour Tour there - our Tastes & Traditions of Lisbon Food Tour. And to celebrate it, I decided to make a video along with Ellis Dixon, our wonderful local manager and Lisbon expert.

So, where did we go?

1. Confeitaria Nacional: This place has been open since the early 1800s and it’s a fantastic place to start your day - a bica (espresso) and a pastry surrounded by gorgeous turn-of-the-century decor.
2. Ginjinha Sem Rival: I love this tiny little shop where you can get a bottle of Portugal’s famous cherry liqueur - and also take a shot of it at the bar. This place has been going since 1840!
3. O Trevo: You have to eat a bifana sandwich when you’re in Lisbon. It’s simple, but delicious - stewed pork, and then you douse it in piri piri sauce and yellow mustard. And this was the place Anthony Bourdain visited!
4. Casa Pereira: I love how this old shop smells like coffee, tea and chocolate. And the walls are lined with incredible bottles of port. So if you want to grab a bottle of port while in the city, this is your place!
5. Trobadores: This place is straight out of Game of Thrones. And despite seemingly a little tacky, it’s actually a place locals come to. You can drink mead (fermented honey) and grill chorizo sausage right at your table!
6. Bonjardim: Piri piri chicken is famous, and if you’re going to get it in Lisbon (and you should), this is the place! The chicken was so deliciously juicy, and the skin fabulously spicy.
7. O Gaiteiro: I love a good old school restaurant. And in Lisbon these tascas the best spots to order grilled fish: sardines, salt-cold and octopus. O Gaiteiro is a place we visit on Devour’s Lisbon food tour and it’s fantastic - great food, full of local clients.
8. Sol e Pesca: This former fishing shop still looks like… a fishing shop. Apart from the enormous display of canned fish. And please, don’t be afraid of canned fish - it can be absolutely delicious, and this is the place to try it!
9. Manteigaria: Custard tarts are everywhere in Lisbon, but not all custard tarts are created equal. These ones from Manteigaria have a wonderfully crispy and flaky pastry, and custard is like delicious molten lava. A plus, you can watch them making them through the glass window.

Once again, I've taken a brief break from Spain, to eat my way through another European city. Who here's been to Lisbon? How was your experience? Let us know any tips in the comments! 🐟

I never understood why this country and its culture and cuisine has been so underrated for so long time... Spain? France? Italy? ok but Portugal... Oh Portugal! Amazing.

I have lived in Portugal for the best part of 20 years and I am married to a local. In my experience, whenever anyone orders a coffee they simply ask for a "café;" not that many people say "bica, " even if certain types of Lisbonites do so. Asking for a "cafe" may seem vague but you will by default receive a 'bica' or what's referred to as an espresso internationally. If you want some extra water in that (so the liquid in your 'espresso' cup comes close to the brim) aks for "um café cheio" ("cheio" meaning "full"). If you would like a black americano-style coffee, ask for "cafe abatanado". For milk options, do as suggested in this lovely video, although - if you really like a milky coffee - ask for a "galão" (quarter of coffee and three quarters milk).

Also, and referring to some of James' other great videos, you wont come across any torrefacto cofee in Portugal :-)

My girlfriend and I saw this video and went to Bonjardim based on the recommendation. Subsequently, it is now our favorite restaurant on the planet. Incredible food. Thanks James

I recently visited Lisbon and I made it a point to try some (actually most) of your recommendations! My God... they were some of the best food I've had. The grilled sardines & grilled bacalhau in O Gaiteiro were just simply amazing! The pasteis de nata in Manteigaria were great but to be honest, I did try many others and Manteigaria was my 3rd choice behind Pastelaria Santo Antonio in Alfama (top!) and Pasteis de Belem (the original). The piri-piri chicken in Bonjardim were to die for and I actually went twice as it was that good! I did try the ginjinha in Jinginha Sem Rival and it was quite good! Having bica in Confeitaria Nacional was very useful mid-day but it was more of the place & experience rather than the pastries. Unfortunately, I was not able to try the bifana in O Trevo as there were so many people queuing but I did try a bifana elsewhere and it was a good snack! Thank you for the awesome recos. We will surely join one of the Devour tours the next time we visit Madrid (& Barcelona)! Cheers!

I been to Lisbon three times Porto three times too. Lisbon is my favorite city, yes even over Madrid which is my second favorite city. I was surprised you did not have Pastéis de Belém! You are eating history. It is my first food when I arrive in Lisbon and the last thing I have before depart Lisbon.

My last visit to Lisbon I stayed in the Estrela District and found a small store that only sold take out Piri Piri Chicken. That was the only food they sold Piri Piri Chicken and only two sizes, whole chicken and half chicken. It was delicious and it a good sign if they only sell one thing, you know they have master cooking it.

I would like to add that Ginginha is more than medicine ;) It is a social moment, often after work people would gather there outside the small shops to drink a shot and chat with coworkers about the day or politics or anything really, when I was younger it was always fun to go there and just listen to the older men discussing life and the most recent scandal on a politician or celebrity and often it was a meeting point, it used to be the favourite spot to meet with friends before a night out or before a date with someone. Now it is full of tourists, sadly, and locals are being driven away from our city center, our traditions and culture. Lisbon was a very old city and often it looked very dilapidated or ruined but it was extremely rich in culture and ingrained traditions, now most of it is gone and most of what you see is for tourism. Like the Pasteis de Nata, every cafe had those and every cafe had their own secrets, so you had your favourite spots to go and eat them, now again, they are made in one or two ways, Pastéis de Belém, Manteigueira where they make thousands a day for tourists, and to be honest I don't like them. I prefer the traditional ones, that you can still find in a few untouched places, like Casa Chinesa, near Rossio, and where you can still find all the most traditional pastries in Lisbon. ( another café that will soon disappear to give way to another Hotel) . And like someone commented here, you did not try seafood and you do not know what you missed.

Hi James, I'm happy to learn that you loved Lisbon. Congrats on the video. Please note that Ginjinha is only 16% volume and not 23%. The 23% that you see on the wallboard is about having the tax included in the price charged. ;)

I am writing this comment in March 2023. I just took the Lisbon Food Tour offered by Devour Tours and it was AMAZING! Our guide Gonzalo was great, took us to some of the places that are shown in this video. The big plus with taking this tour is that you don't have to wait in line to get in some of those places (since they are so popular) but also they have table waiting for the tour. Highly recommended. Lisbon is a wonderful gastronomical destination.
