Just back from an 8 night trip to Portugal, 5 nights in Lisbon and 3 in Porto (not too different from this itinerary!). I absolutely loved exploring both cities as well as the daytrip I took from Lisbon to Sintra/Cabo de Roca.

I travelled solo and stayed in hostels in both cities and would like to add that Portugal is very doable on a budget. It's also very welcoming for solo travellers with extremely friendly people.

As the son of wonderful Portuguese born mother and French born father.
Portugal is my heart ❤️ I am a Portuguese citizen, fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian.
Spent my summers throughout these 4 countries but Portugal is everything to me.
The culture, history, music, food, geographical beauty is beyond measure.
I will be spending 10 days in August looking for the perfect town to buy second home.
My choices on this yearly 10 day trip are Santarém, Alcobaça, Mafra and Évora.
Maybe I’ll run into you Dave!!!

Nice detailed video, Dave!! We Loved our 11day trip to Portugal in April! We flew from US to Lisbon, a quick 3-stop Metro ride to Oriente Station &
took a beautiful 3hr train trip S to Albufeira for 4full days. We did not rent a car & used the Bolt app for car service if we didn't walk. Checked into our Apt by 12noon near old town; settled in, got groceries & took a fun & informational local Tuk Tuk evening tour to see the area & a beautiful coastal sunset! Took 2 days for Dreamwave tours: caves & dolphins, and parasailing. Loved our time at the marina & had a few nice lunches there! Took a Bolt to Caviero & spent a lovely day wandering back towards Albufeira on the boardwalk & trails, exploring caves/coves with a lite coastal lunch at Boneca & fruity icecream. We took a bolt back to our apt. We really enjoyed old town Albufeira & all the shops near the beaches. We took a bus to Lisbon & another bus to Obidos. Stayed the night in Obidos Castle & loved wandering the village for a dinner stop after the tourists left. Took a bus to our Lisbon Apt. Took the ferry across to the Cristo Rei Statue: beautiful views of Lisbon! We had 2 amazing day trips: Sintra- Regaleira & Pena Palaces, including a costal lunch near Praia Grande & visit to Cabo da Roca. Also a day trip to historic, beautiful Tomar- Both Recommend! And our final, full day was with the amazing Super Mario (we found from Dave's channel) learning about the history of Lisboa with many beautiful stops & views! Amazing 11days! We are ready to go back & see the North & central, plus looking at options for retirement!

I am going to 🇵🇹 in September. My friend will be travelling with me. We will spend two days on our own before we join the tour group. So I am reading upon cuisine, history, and learning a few phrases in Portuguese. Will even look up what not to do so that I don’t offend the locals. So great to travel abroad again!

I wish you had shown Tomar and Obidos but I get the time limitations. I LOVED Portugal and I'm going back.

Tips on social etiquette in Portugal:
- Don’t litter. Really, it’s a big faux pas here.
- Greet everyone, always. Even if there are 16 fellow hikers on the narrow path, give each one some eye contact and a brief hello.
- If you are invited to a party, be sure to leave before midnight so the host has some time to clean up.
- Portuguese people love their niceties and you should respect that.
- Don't use public speakers or speak loudly on public transport. It is considered bad manners. Portuguese People value individual silence.
- On the escalator, people try to line up for those who don't have an urgent need to get on and leave space for those who need to get on urgently.
- Avoid asking about a person’s age, family, marital status, religion, ethnicity, or topics like Portugal’s role in the Portuguese Colonial Empire

"Saudade, a word that cannot be precisely defined in English..." Suggestion: check out the definition for the (very archaic) English word "desiderium" - feel a keen desire for (something lacking) / an ardent desire or longing, especially : a feeling of loss or grief for something lost - There you have it, that's exactly the meaning of "saudade".

In Portugal, being honest and polite is genuinely important to them. Portuguese people love being polite!! How I can say, you will discover the significance of multiculturalism and diversity in Portugal.
You will discover:
- Portugal is a democratic society in which everyone is expected to contribute to public life.
- Portugal is a pluralistic society that respects the diversity of various cultures from within a democratic framework.
- Religious freedom is a constitutionally guaranteed right and most Portuguese people practice Christianity.
- Portugal claims to value gender equality.
- Portuguese people love their niceties and you should respect that.
- Portuguese people tend to be polite, reserved, direct, and a little guarded at first.
- Portuguese people are more reserved, you might not get to know the intimate details of a person’s life very quickly.
- Portuguese people love small formal talk and probably invite you for a coffee.
- Portugal is very Progressive and Developed country
- Portugal is a very safe place.

Here to second Dave's thoughts on both Fado and Sintra. We visited Portugal for the first time in 2023 and had an incredible five days in Lisbon, with two day trips (Sintra and Cascais). Also got to experience Fado music right outside our AirBnb window in the Alfama neighborhood.

Biggest mistakes I’ve made over many years is trying to cover too much area. I’d never cover even what you suggest. Portugal definitely should be broken into north center and southern thirds at 10 days each. And absolutely rent a car for the fun of the back roads and out of the way towns. Portugal is my favorite!

Just returned yesterday. Spent 11 days in Portugal with a lot of your info. It was fantastic. I did use a car because I wanted to visit some remote places. Thanks Dave
