On the old crappy computer system at my first job to change the gas prices you had to pull up this archaic looking computer program and type in the price for every single pump AND octane. 6 pumps with 3 octanes meant you had to type shit in 18 times. Definitely a similar system here and someone f'ed up

I heard that sometimes when they have a lot left over from the regular gas, they poured into the premium tanks because it’s more expensive expensive for the truck to take the gas back that they were supposed to drop off

Demand might be low for it? Or it came from a different refinery and got it for a cheaper price

I don't know about this scenario, but: If every higher grade is cheaper than the one before it, you're at a station that uses high ethanol blends to do it. I wouldn't say that's actually much of a problem in reality, but I wouldn't use it in anything that isn't fuel injected with a reasonable fuel trim range. The computer will have to be able to ask for about +10~15% to make an optimal combustion cycle.

Some refinery’s where built when it looked like the industry standard for refining gas was moved to higher octane fuel such as 93, only the opposite happened and instead the industry decided to focus on lower octane fuel such as 87. As a result many refinery’s that were built to make 93 octane gas now have to dilute the gas down to 87 octane adding more cost to the refinery, the can sell 93 cheaper because nothing needs to be done to it once it’s made. 93 is usually only available in certain gas stations near certain refinerys
