Short and simple today. Why is this loving god so darn harsh? Thanks everyone for being here!

This is a topic I never really thought about but you're so right, the God of the Bible does often refer to us as garbage. When I was a Christian, I struggled with self-worth, often telling myself that I am worthless and that I should hate myself. I was told by some around me that this was radical but that's what the damn book says! So glad that I got out and have finally gained some self-love. I am good enough.

I've left this comment on several other videos...Brandon, I truly appreciate you!!! You are helping me untangle so much damage done by religion. I am soooo much happier and at peace!😊

When I was a Christian I actually took comfort and had joy when I contemplated these things. I'm like dust. I'm wretched. God gets to choose how he wants to use me—as a glittering chalice or as a pedantic, ugly common vessel. It's so refreshing to have my eyes opened to the horrible, dysfunctional unhealthy ugliness of this controlling religion. Thank you, Brandon!

The analogy of god being the good shepherd and we being his sheep appears frequently in the bible. Believers rarely pause to think about what that really means. A shepherd does not "love" his sheep. He regards them as objects--solely for the purpose of making money. The sheep will eventually be robbed of their wool or slaughtered for their meat, and the shepherd's only incentive for maintaining them is with that in mind. Brandon, the parable of the lost sheep, analyzed along these lines, would make for a great Mindshift presentation.

These teachings from the Bible reminds of something a cult leader may say to reinforce the idea that the followers should abandon self confidence and self reliance and follow, without question, what your leader tells you. It seems much more like teachings to control people than it does a caring message from a loving God. Btw, give us your money and follow my rules, or you will be punished for eternity.

How could anybody want to worship a God who treats his creation awfully and is repulsed by us? He treats us like we are worthless and he is Great. This is sick and disgusting

As someone with diagnosed clinical depression, it's so ironic that Christians will tell me "pray for God to make you happy and find joy in His love" but my depression has gotten significantly more manageable after losing my faith. It's almost like being constantly told you're trash has a negative impact on your self-image. Who'd have thunk?

The scariest one might have to be "brides", i mean imagine being forced to be linked with that monster essentially as a commodity.

Most people are more respectful to their pets than the god of the Bible is to humanity. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Great points in this video! And to top it off, the typical gaslighting in the Christian response: “these things only bother you because you’re so prideful!” Imagine a household where the parents refer to the children as worthless maggots, and then punish them for being “prideful” because they resent the derogatory name calling. Sick.

Hey Brandon and everyone part of this community. I just came out this Weekend to my family as agnostic. You helped me tremendously in taking this step and how I should do it. I want to thank you for helping me feel understood in a way none of my current friends can. Your work is very important. I dont know where I would be without people like you. Thank you!

Another thing that I find highly problematic is using animals' names as derogatory words itself. Didn't the creator of the Universe know that worms, for instance, are very useful creatures that are doing great work for soil? Dogs are wonderful animals who help us humans find lost people, catch criminals and guide those who're blind. Realizing how terrible animals in the Bible were treated was kind of a nail in the casket for me after which I stopped identifying myself as a Christian.

I think we definitely need a podcast about the Bible and animal rights. There's so much to talk about.

The young devout man in our seminary wrote the Psalm on his wall in huge letters: Psalm 22:6 "But I am a worm and not a man".

Therapist: What's your relationship with god like?

Christian: Well... I'm a ceramic pot, slave, child-bride sheep of my shepherd father, who is simultaneously all just and all merciful...

Therapist: We're gonna need a few more sessions to unpack that.

This is the kind of stuff that I wish believers would ponder. It just doesn't make sense.

My dog doesn't wait for the bread to be tossed to him, he takes it for himself!

Is it just me or does all of this stuff coming from the Bible sound like the stuff that a child would be making up about an abusive/ absent parent?
Trying to convince themselves that this parent really does love them, etc.
Thanks for bringing this up Brandon, this was something kind of crucial to me when I was a Christian.
A chronically depressed Christian who felt like there was a no win situation when it came to Christianity.
I was never able to reconcile myself to actually believing that this God was in any way real, yet I had had this toxic ideology pumped into my little brain from the time I was born.
Thanks for pointing this out to other people who know there's something wrong there, but can't quite figure it out.
❤❤

I'm continually astonished by how much I missed when I was reading the bible as a christian. I really was like a little child: naive, gullible, easily influenced. I would put on my "god hat" and pick up the bible and will myself into that Neverland where I forced square pegs into round holes and came away thinking I knew the secrets of the universe. I mean, the bible is Littered with outrageous passages that show god to be monstrous. Did I notice? When I did, I would just pray harder and hope god hadn't noticed my treason. Haha. I was never sure he was on my side. Life makes sense now, but I do wish I had figured it out sooner.

This was a great topic Brandon, and I remember hearing from Christians saying that Christianity is not a Religion it`s a relationship. Some relationship! a God that puts himself on a pedestal over his lowly, sinful, broken, creatures. Pretty sure Christians would consider this idea to be an abusive relationship in any other context.

My family went to this church for a few weeks where the pastor would often emphasize how lowly and unworthy we are as god's people. My dad, who is also a pastor, eventually went up to him to correct him on this language, probably pointing out some of the instances where we are described in a more positive light. I wonder now if that pastor was actually right to teach in the way he did, based on the bible.
