"A Breakthrough in sound"? The UK television jokes and puns will be going all over the Web for that one in the 21st century (especially by me!)

I have only just heard this on YouTube on Tuesday 04/06/2024 (47 years after the original transmission that I never heard because I live in the Carlton and LWT area in the UK) and it just blew me away! Of course, we also had Thames Television in London in the UK, before Carlton Television took over on Friday 01/01/1993. Now in 2024, even Carlton television (technically) doesn't exist any more.

Thanks a lot for uploading this to YouTube so I could hear the "alien" transmission for myself.

Anyone noticed the deep tone pulsing in the background ? At 5:05 it started to speed up, tone getting higher and it disappeared at 5:24
I'm pretty sure whoever spoke there lowered the frequency to be heard.

I heard it clearer than that ... in Central London EC1 R5DU ... it was like the guy was in my room .... I was 15 and waiting to watch To the Manor born and the American soap opera SOAP ... I honestly think it was meant for my ears ... coz so many strange things happened I almost died and was saved so many times ... one Time in France being English I looked the wrong way crossing a road and my mum grabbed my jumper and pulled me back... the 18 wheeler grazed my nose ! There was more than that and I just started to think that I was the luckiest person in the world lol 😆
Then ages past and I learned the truth.. I tried to tell everyone I loved .. but they disowned me saying that I was crazy 🤪.... who is crazy Everything I said would happen and I escaped to Egypt 🇪🇬

Thank you for this but I think this whole scenario goes much further and I am most certainly not trying to correct anyone, as I actually think that this taking over the network happened at both Hannington and Croydon (So in 1977 it was Southern and Thsmes respectively)

The voice of the Newscaster at the beginning of this clip is actually Andrew Gardner on Thames, while the pictures are Cliff Mitchelmore on Southern Television. I am certain studio set didn't come into being until 1980, basically for when Southern bidded un-successfully to renew their franchise which saw Southern Television become TVS on 31st December, 1981/ January 1st 1982. Cliff Mitchelmore also didn't arrive at Southern to present their flagship news service Day By Day as well as other news services as well until 1980.

I am interested to read that someone heard it in London also, was channel 9 High-jacked also? I am interested to hear several different news readers and announcers mention it. I am trying to fathom if the announcer when the Southern board was on screen was Brian Nissan or Christopher Robbie. The latter is still with us and has been a Dr Who baddie twice. (Which has nothing to do with this! Lol)

I have also seen this clip with the correct newscaster from Southern speaking and for the life of me I am trying to think who it was. There is a chance I have it on VHS.

"...from five transmitters simultaneously, spread over great distances, ..." That's easy if they are repeating each other, a cheap STL trick. All you do is jam the main transmitter, and the next one repeats whatever come out of the one before it. Unless the receivers are protected by some kind of lock code, like a sub-audible tone scheme (good old analog days) It would be easy to jam the signal anywhere along the line. I know of one transmitter that might still be fully open to this kind of jamming, but I'm not going to suggest anything.

This video is a fake recreation: it isn't even the same newsreader who was on duty that day. It's just about possible - though unlikely - that the sound might be original, but that's as far as it goes. Remember that home VCRs were an extremely rare item in 1977.

The incident was a prank, with a very simple technical explanation. The choice of the Hannington transmitter was that it took its feed direct off-air from Rowridge on the Isle of Wight (probably the only main transmitter to do so). Hi-jacking the sound would be a simple matter of putting a transmitter on the same frequency as the sound feed from the Isle of Wight: to do the same for the video would have been a lot harder.

"The mystery has never been solved" - actually, the only thing that is unknown is WHO was responsible, but they were definitely humans and using fairly unsophisticated equipment: a simple FM transmitter attached to a cassette recorder.
