During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.

This trailer purposefully includes captions (just like the film itself) so that hearing and non-hearing audiences can experience Ruben’s journey.

Sound of Metal arrives in select theaters November 20, and on Prime Video December 4 in the U.S.

This film is a masterpiece about coming to terms with a loss, embracing the world changing, the 5 stages of grief, so many lessons here. The cast are brilliant. Recommend 10/10

Riz Ahmed is one actor who hasn't been utilized properly yet! Terrific potential.

This isn't a 2 hr info movie about being deaf or wearing ear plugs. It's about loss of superficial love (music, girlfriend) and unveiling real love (community, self discovery) through a multi-year struggle with addiction. A movie to watch to the very end and again.

Please wear earplugs at concerts! It’s not a question of toughness or youth. hearing damage happens easier than you think and it doesn’t heal like the rest of your body!

Hearing loss is simply a symbol of coming to terms with the loss of something we take for granted and moving forward, accepting change. It's one one of the most beautiful, profound films I've ever seen.

Started loosing my hearing when I was 20, half way through med school. You just never think it could happen to you. It was pretty devastating, but you learn to live with it. Masks bring a whole other challenge when you can’t lipread, but you learn to live with that too. Humans adapt

Edit: thank you for the kind comments 🙏

Riz Ahmed was great as always in this, but for me the outstanding performance was Paul Raci as the leader of the deaf community, every scene he was in was captivating. I thought he must've been some famous actor but if you read his backstory this was basically his first proper movie role. At 72 years old, that is an incredible performance!

As a piano player and someone who has an emotional attachment to music as a whole, I teared up watching this trailer. The hopelessness of losing your hearing, but the hope you may gain when you accept it and start learning to live with it. This movie looks intense and amazing. I can’t wait

This movie made me tear up during the trailer, I’ve been losing my hearing gradually for the past 10 years in my left ear, my right is completely gone, and I’ve played drums since I was 3. I have a few vids on my YouTube, this just made me feel “not alone”...there’s always someone else out there dealing with what you are...it’s amazing

Riz is a terrific actor who needs better roles. Even in Venom, you could tell he's doing the best he had with a shitty script

Riz ahemad is an actor par excellence, I have been shouting this from top of my lung ever since I watched him in nightcrawler.

I started wearing earplugs at concerts a few years ago, and what a world of difference it makes. You can still hear the music just fine, but when it's over, you can still hear like normal and there's no ringing. I once had ringing in my ears for days after a show. Never again.
