Top guy switches while the other stays low under the screen to stay attached

Easily. You talk to each other and communicate if you are going to switch the screen or not. 😂

I initially thought it was just a simple split action, but there's an added wrinkle of throwing in a down screen beforehand to confuse the defense.

It's tough because in theory you should know to switch during the split action, but that initial twirling action will throw most teams off.

Triangle offense. It’s what made Jordan and the bulls famous.

Basically 2 options: #7 has to switch. (The drawback is that, maybe you don't want to give up that switch. It might be a bad matchup or cause other issues on defense)

OR #6 has to back off the ball handler a little bit to cut off the passing lane, because he almost tipped the ball even while he was guarding that close (the second option would give up a decent look from Middy, but that's always better than an open lay-up)

Don't switch. Stay in front of your man.

Recapping, one defender (Red 8) switches while one (Red 7) stays on man. Switching, if White 3 had been shooting lights out would probably have been smart, but considering there is no sound it's difficult to know what communication there was. You can however see a reaction from Red 7 that he was expecting Red 8 to stay on man.

This will likely work very often if the wing screener (White 0) is quicker than the defense (Red 8), since after the first screen he needs to get all the way around (at 0:05 he needs to continue to get between White 0 and the basket), rather than work the screen with his back to the ball (meaning he can't see the timing on the pass). This also punishes poor communicating teams, since the double screen is an unusual action that will not be something most will be experienced in guarding.

You can even weave over to the left side and repeat the play until you get the match-up you are looking for if the defense switches and stays under.

Overall, I'd say it was mostly a blown play by Red 8, but very very difficult to hold him accountable since the mistake probably was to not get baited to go high (by both defenders) even before the first screen was even set. White overloaded the top - which well-shooting teams can do, so even if Red had switched after the first screen, both defenders would have been in a bad position to guard a 3-pointer.

This works in 5x5 too, just put some ghost action on the left side to keep the last two defefnders occupied, e.g. flex action and fill up. Especially since this would take place at the same time as the actual play.

One guy drops when guarding that split action. This is the first point so it was a good surprise attack to set the tone.

So far comments have said, switch, don’t switch, guard your man (oldheads) and just about anything along the lines of “stop being bad” so apparently everything you can think of can guard it 🤙🏼
Really nice idea though, props to them. That’s super clean flipping the use of who’s screener and screen user mid action.

Easy communication. 1 man play top 1 man play bottom. Whoever cut to the hoop that’s 1 man assignment whoever goes up top that’s 1 man assignment and the man on ball don’t allow a clear pass he was ball watching

One person takes the high man, other takes the low man on the screen. It’s not to complicated, but definitely understand in the moment it can catch you off guard

Watching tape, listening to scouting reports, practicing against it, communicate

Always keep a defender between the basket and the player. Red 7 needed to switch when his player flared back out to the 3

Simple...harass the "trigger man" (passer). When a team is running a play, defenses typically guard the passer (as in this video) passively, or as though they're running through the play for demonstration. You have to guard or harass the passer (without fouling of course) to force him to independently have to make a decision. If he beats you off the dribble, you live with the results or you may get help from a team mate. Point being, you want to disrupt the play at the point of attack to where they now have to improvise rather than get an easy lay-up.

Gotta read it before they play it out!!easier said then done 😂 communication is key

Let them run in circles, don’t chase them. Always guard the lane. Let em take the shot outside. Even if they get the shot off, it’s a lower percentage play. New drills for practice.
