A particular impurity — the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre — allows diamonds to be used for everything from geolocation to diagnosing disease. I'm wondering, why is a diamond crystal necessary? Can't we do that in a smaller molecule? Say, a doped fullerene or something even simpler?
