Travis, I’ve been doing judo for over 20 years and even as a black belt your videos have helped me tremendously. This in particular is something I struggle with most when competing. Thank you for all the advice and tips massively grateful for your expertise

This is so awesome! Travis is a *beast* at this grip break -- since standing ippon seoi nage is one of his best throws, he was really good at stripping the opponent's grip on his right collar with one hand and then fitting into the space for his throw.
I love Travis' detail of pressuring forward to make space (ie, separation between the opponent's collar grip and his shoulder), instead of the intuitive method of moving / leaning back. I think people who only do randori in the gym can forget how important edge-of-the-mat tactics are for live competition. The intensity of pressure is totally different; if you retreat even a little bit against a good competitor, they can eat up that space in a heartbeat and chase you down the mat like it's their job.
One thing I really like about the post-2012 IJF rules is that it's forced everyone to get good at one-handed collar grip breaks. I remember always thinking it was something that only super strong Olympians could do, and that normal folks like me should only do two-handed grip breaks to clear my collar. Now I love the one handed grip breaks; although it's certainly a lot more difficult than breaking with two hands, it is way more offensive as I can go straight into my attacks. I also feel one big issue with two-handed grip breaks is that I temporarily lose all distance management by devoting two hands to their sleeve -- and the opponent can always reach over my shoulder with their free hand to get a big power grip. Actually I do this all the time in BJJ to punish people who try to break my collar grip with two hands.

Thank you Travis, I’ve been doing Judo for just over a year and a half, the most frustrating thing is consistently not ‘being able to close the distance’. Going to definitely try this and some of your other stuff once clubs are finally open again (UK)

Travis Stevens the fucking GOAT. Been training for like four years and hadn't found a good answer to the stiff-arm until I came across this.

Nice, kind of like a “reverse” wrist in turn manipulation, but not attacking the wrist per se but the whole arm,

Wow perfect. I'm am currently sitting eating dinner at 10:30pm thinking about how I got stuff warmed like hell thru practice and what am I gonna do differently. Simple and to the point thank you!

A cocky Judoka in Simi Valley dojo stiffed armed me, and asked me to solve that situation. I am a Black Belt in Japanese Jiu Jitsu. I thought of an Atemi Waza to his throat and followed by a nasty lock, but that would make me a really bad guy. So, I didn't do that. I played dumb.

So when it is the double collar you just do one then the other?

That mostly a strength move. Most judo grip breaks are. It’s just about overpowering the fingers

I got stiff armed by two guys tonight... I am still crying inside. I couldn't do anything ( my brain just shut down ).
Afterwards, I thought of the solution of circling around ( like for a sasae ), which is "Tai sabaki" maybe ? In training after the randoris it worked like a charm, but I wonder if I can pull it off next time.
I will try to use Travis's awesome advises too in combination. Something HAS to work.
I mean, stiff arms... I just refuse to use force against force. What is even the point ? But I kind of hate myself for not being able to beat stiff opponents.

How much sleep should I get per night and still be able to recover from practice, is 5 to 6 hours enough?

If you're pushing with that right shoulder could you be vulnerable to a sasai or hiza on that side if he uses your pushing motion in his favour? If he decides, as you push, to pull you onto his left foot using the collar grip? Genuine question not nit picking or trying to be smart....

I trained with a skinny guy much taller than me that always stiff arms, his gi is too big because he is skinny so even if I can grab him, it slides over his head and comes off.
