Hi! New subbie from Tampa Florida 🌴… I really like your channel.. open and honest… I was stationed in Crete in the 80s… have traveled back to Greece & Crete many times. I’d give anything to be able to move back. I’m not Greek, but my life was peaceful. America is a hot mess now. I’ll keep looking for a way to take my pets and get outta here🥰…I’ll sell my house and move there🙂 because I want my life back. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to not give up. Take care.🌴

As a Greek person born in Athens and lived there for all my life I have to agree with everything you said on your video. I had to move to the UK in 2018 and leave my family behind, parents, siblings and friends. There was no future for me in this country, getting paid 544 euros net every month, not able to move out of my parents, counting every penny when going out with friends, not able to buy my own car, start making dreams for a better future. Greece is perfect for holidays and the best place on earth if you can afford to visit islands, enjoy the beautiful weather, beaches, food. It’s a nightmare though if you live there permanently and trying to survive day to day.

You are strong and brave to move overseas on your own. Not many people can do that. You should be very proud of yourself and the beautiful life you've created ♡

Thank you for sharing your experience, it’s really touching and I didn’t know things are this way in Greece. I’m actually visiting now in Greece (Crete) and I’m maybe just lucky, but on my week traveling here I’m having a wonderful experience. Everyone is nice and calm, the nature is amazing and the prices are comfortable. I guess everyone got different luck in their experience. I got really touched by your story and saddened to hear it, hope now things are better. You’re wonderful and thank you for sharing this 🤍

Thank you for your candidness about how some Greeks in Greece are. I’m Greek-American looking to get Greek citizenship because my grandfather was born there. I plan on purchasing a home there. So I can come there when I have time off to trace my family’s past. ✌️👊🤙

Spot on! Greece's beautiful islands and vacation places are for tourists, but actual life there is extremely difficult for foreigners, also for Greeks. I have been in Thessalonica helping my daughter care for grandsons for 6 years. I am originally from the US, married in Austria for 24 years. The people here are, generally speaking, very rude and impolite. Yes, I am constantly being overcharged, cheated in change, cheated by landlords, exactly as this young lady describes. I paid double electric bills for 3 years, because the landlord put the neighboring apartment on my bill. The landlord also wanted to add on extra expenses for what he should have been paying for. 11 taxis passed me by on a Sunday morning after I attended a non-Greek Orthodox Christian service, had a sling on my arm because of a broken shoulder. No one would give me a ride, but when a Greek came, they took them. Men will always push their way first at a store, and have no respect for women. I have been spat upon about half a dozen times, simply when walking down the street! (The is a custom here for people they consider "evil".) Strikes are often. The post office is miserable. People are angry and hateful because of the years of austerity, coupled with covid and the war, but that doesn't give them a right to blame others or to treat them badly because of it. I have rarely ever been refused service in my life, but it has happened on numerous occasions here. I traveled a lot in Europe and the US and I have never experienced anything like this. They say that once one gets into the Balkans, things are even worse. By the way, in order to open a bank account in Thessalonica, they told me I had to pay $10, 000, although I am an EU citizen. In the US anyone can open a bank account for $50, or sometimes for even $1. People in the government agencies and hospitals are also equally as rude and simply want to refuse service to "foreigners" while, in contrast to that, hundreds of thousands of Greeks have left to other countries where they earn well and are treated fairly, with respect. I understand this young lady's frustration. Unfortunately it was her first excursion as a young woman out into the "big, wide world".

Athens has its dark side but this is also true of many European cities where people will try to scam you. I think the issue here is that you were indeed naive.

So I was born in Greece. Left for the USA when I was 3. I am now in my late thirties. My parents already have a house in northern part of Greece so I don’t have to worry about housing but I was wondering how much do you need on average to survive? I don’t think I would need a car as most places like the supermarket and pharmacy is within walking distance. How much would you need to survive for one person? Would 1, 000 euro a month be enough for one person?

Very interesting and real, thanks for sharing. I'd be interested in hearing what you do for a living ( e.g. now in Switzerland), how you find these jobs abroad and what kind of social security schedule are you on as a temporary worker? Will you be having a pension in Greece?

Thank you for your honesty and great information. I am thinking of moving to Greece as a Greek American but not sure I want to deal with all these issues. Just getting my passport renewed is a pain every five years since I cant renew my passport by mail. The Greeks make everthing so difficult. I am saddened by the amount of graffiti in and around Athens....no respect for this country of phenomenal history. I will keep investigating my options. Looking forward to viewing your other vlogs. Cheers 🥂

Hello!

First off, thank you so much for your amazing video. It’s so detailed. I think I have a pretty similar situation and I need a likeminded person to exchange my thoughts with. Would you mind getting in touch?

I have a similar experience with Greece. I’m Greek born in Ukraine and Studied in Russia. And gotta say that everything you mention is brutal true. I got my Greek documents but I don’t think I will ever return back to Greece. I lived there for half a year and I’ve experienced all the nightmare. For holidays it’s the best place to head to, but if you want to live as a human, run from there.. Now I’m living in the Czech Republic and couldn’t be happier. My eyes, though, are set on Scandinavian countries. I wish all good things for my Greece…
