What memories do you have from this disaster?

I was 12 and stayed home from school that day. As i lived in New Smyrna Beach, just up the coast, we could watch the launch from our yard, or even better, from the beach a 1/2 block away. It was ridiculously cold that morning and you could see the strange contrails that were so obviously offtrack. A terrible moment in time.

I was in 3rd grade when this happened. My teacher was ruunerup to Crista. I will never forget the tears on Ms.Smiths face after watching Challenger explode. We all hugged our teacher but didn't grasp the devastation we all just saw. As we were just kids. All we knew was our teacher was very sad. 😢

Somebody should have been arrested after those engineers said don't send it up because the temperature. Yet NASA 😢decided to do it anyways

My High School had us all come out to the football field to watch the launch. We were in shock and that picture of it blowing up is embedded in my mind.

My third grade class watched the Challenger launch live and when it exploded, we had no idea what actually happened. Our teacher was in tears but silent as she ran up to turn the TV on the wheeled stand off and turned the whole AV cart around. She just turned lights off for “quiet time” and she sat at her desk and wept for what seemed like an hour. She left the room shortly after that and returned a bit later.

I was a senior in high school. I don’t remember why I had to go to the library but I was there and the television was on. They were showing the disaster and I remember asking the librarian if that was the Challenger and she confirmed that it was. I remember feeling gutted.

I was one of those kids watching on a tv in my 4th grade classroom. I didn't know what was going on at the time. I was too young to understand & no one explained it.

So sad to hear the back story of the event. Unless the engineers could prove with 100% certainty that there was going to be a catastrophic failure, NASA wasn't going to listen. NASA felt that it was worth the risk. Wonder if the decision makers at NASA would have looked at it the same way if they had a family member on the crew.

The inclusion of Christa McAuliffe as the first teacher in space added a deeply personal dimension to the tragedy, especially for the students who watched in real-time.

And look at what teachers have become today. Kitty toucher and groomers. especially here in California where I live. Teachers are told to keep secrets from their parents, what kind of person does that? Yes, kitty toucher, it’s actually a law here in California. 6:34

There was no explosion. That is VERY important to understanding the disaster. BTW, all accidents are preventable.
