How and When to Seed Start Kale & Collard Greens Indoors: Cool Weather - The Rusted Garden 2014

Kale and collard greens love the cool weather and can take frost and freezes. You should start them indoor 4-6 weeks before the last frost in your area. They grow fast and can look a little 'leggy' even with a lot of light. Don't worry, they form strong wood stems and will right themselves

I'm glad you explained the "leggy-ness". I was getting a little nervous about my kale. They have been really pulling toward the sunlight.

I'm starting my seeds today, 02/02/18. It's my first time growing kale, chives, basil, sage, cilantro, swiss chard, onion, thyme, parsley, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, couliflower, beet, okra, sweet corn, squash. My second season of eggplants, variety of pepper, cucumber, and tomatoes. I purchase some from your shop. I'm looking for all of your videos because you are the one who explain better the process from start to finish, beside my zone is 7 too. Thank you for teaching us your knowledges. Blessings!

Thank you for the video, very informative and easy to understand. I started kale last month and I just threw seeds in a pot. it has grown but I dont think they will be succesful after seeing this video. Im gonna start over. I have a bearded dragon and he loves kale. Where I live kale is not sold(mexico). so I decided to give it a try.

I am thoroughly enjoying your videos – you have an extremely clear presentation and packed with great information.  I find starting seeds anxiety provoking because I’m looking to become nearly food self-sufficient, and just don’t have that much desire (money) to be light hearted about my seedlings failing...cheers to best practices!

Fantastic video. I never knew they could be transplanted so deep! That's an awesome bit of information that I'll be putting into practice this year!

Great video, you just stopped me from over planting my seeds😲. Plus I was going to use the little pucks. Think I'll save them for the beans and big flowers instead.

Thank you, Gary, for ANOTHER GREAT 'HOW TO' video.  I always learn something from you. Two foot of snow here in Wisconsin, BUT I am harvesting (indoors) sugar snap pea sprouts that I am growing in my south windows. Just a little something to keep me busy during this long & cold winter. Keep the videos coming!  :0)

Going to sow some kale seeds for micro greens... they should be even more nutritiois than large vegetables.

I knew you grew Kale but couldn’t remember when. I’m in PA, zone 6a, but I think my microclimate is more similar to yours. I’ve had better luck with cold weather crops in the fall than Spring (like broccoli). But I’ll give kale a try this Spring! How long do you harvest them? Do they last past Spring for you?
Thanks so much for your channel too! I find myself just searching for rusted garden videos on YouTube for all my garden questions.
