I'm a White belt too I've been watching your videos as study tools. Learning the basics is the ground work of any practice

First you need to get that tee for them.

Solid advice. Teach the basics and the positional hierarchy of BJJ first (open guard > closed guard > side control > mount > back control). The principle of diminishing the effectiveness of striking by taking an oppt. down. And only the simplest of subs. Better yet articulate why they should want to use their time as white belts to become experts at escaping positions and submissions (particularly important in schools that allow rolling from day 1, as they will spend 99% of the time getting crushed as the new guys which often demoralizes people out of training the art)

so true, I'm trying to explain basic concepts and positions to my kids. anything to complicated and it goes straight over them and don't try to teach to many things

I was going to say, learn how to tie the belt and how to breathe. Then position, escapes, sweeps all before submissions. That’s how I look at it.

The problem is most BJJ schools don't have a clear start date (like universities, for example, do). The first time I did BJJ was in a small school all I did was X-guard for the first week, quite confusing...
The next school I went to was a bit bigger, so they had beginners class where they followed a structure as you outlined, Bernardo, much easier!

How can small schools keep advanced practitioners engaged while maintaining a basic curriculum?

Bernardo it would be very interesting to try to do an example of what a good White belt program could be. Can you do a video like this?

I think the best way, if someone just start from scratch.. To do not teach him anything first three monthes, let him only roll with other players. He does not need in the beginning to know any names or any techniques.. He needs only to learn to tap all the time.
Later you see how learning jiu-jitsu will be more easy for him... After three monthes he can start absolutly to learn the fundamentals, do not worry about him, he already got the feeling for jiu-jitsu, he Starts know his body, he starts know the test of many kind of submissions, he has now haundred of questions which will lead him to learn proper jiu-jitsu... Go with him in these journey exactly like this he must roll to only survive then he must bring the escaping to his game... If he survive and escape then he is in the right way 100% every thing will come later... He must understand then the guard, he must understand later guard passing.. The submissions are the smallest part of his jiu-jitsu journey.. After that, this journy will go without end.. Each day training more sharp, more timing, more control more setup... The new one who enter and jump dierectly to the top of the ladder, never will be champion, most of the time...off course this is my humble opinion and experience...

the first thing you need to learn as a white belt, is to CALM DOWN

What set of basic jiu jitsu techniques would you use for self defence (including takedowns, positions & submissions)?

Ahh so you turned it around on the instructor rather than the white belt making the mistake.

Hello Bernardo, I love your contents, but I feel that someone very interesting has made a lot of work into exactly this point of classifying fundamentals and basics his name is Matt Thornton at www.straightblastgym.com, It's about understanding broadly combat sports, then delivery systems, and then Jiu-jitsu. I really appreciate you address this, I would love to have you on my podcast to also talk about this. It would be a "huge honor for me" . Thank you Bernardo.

First you have to explain to them that they are learning Jiu jitsu, not Jew Gypsy 😂
