In this video, we are discussing the History of English Literature. We are talking about all the literary ages of English Literature from the Old English Period or the Anglo Saxon Period to the Post Modern Age.

We start our discussion with the Anglo Saxon period which continued till 1066 AD. With the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD, Anglo Norman period started. Then we have the Age of Chaucer from 1340-1400 which is the opening moment of English Literature.
Next is the Age of Revival when Reformation of the church took place. Tudor Dynasty started. The Elizabethan Age is also called the Golden Age of England. It started from 1558 and continued till 1603. Renaissance Humanism is an important characteristic of the Elizabethan age. Drama flourished during this age with dramatists such as Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare.
Jacobean Age (1603-1625) is the reign of King James 1 whereas Caroline Age (1625-1640) is the reign of King Charles 1. Civil war took place between King Charles 1 and the Parliament of England after which Oliver Cromwell became the Lord Protector of England. In 1660, King Charles 2 was restored to the throne and that marks the Restoration Age which is also called the Age of Dryden.
From 1700-1798, we have the Enlightenment Age or the Neoclassical Age or the Augustan Age. It was the age of prose and reason. Next is the Romantic Age from 1798-1837 which is the age of feelings and emotions.
Victorian Age is the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837-1901. It is the next Golden period of Britain.
Modern Age started from 1901. There were the 2 world wars and the great depression that made the world fragmented.
Post Modern Age started after the 2nd world war in 1945. Britain lost its power and USA became a super power. Writers started celebrating the disorientation and absurdity. Theatre of Absurd, Angry Young man theatre gained popularity.
