Wondering what to do sitting around at home? Let's do a little time travel & embark on a Literary Tour where Arpita is going to take you through different ages of English Literature. As the #COVID19 necessitated lockdown continues, we endeavour to bring your studies to your home. We are doing our best to ensure that you are not distanced from studies, as we all continue with social distancing!

The story of English literature begins with the Germanic tradition of the Anglo-Saxon settlers. The Anglo-Saxons were prominent in the early Middle Ages, stretching from the first century up to the Renaissance, which began around the 14th century. The Anglo-Saxons invaded what is current-day England around the year 450, and were the dominant group until the Norman invasion in 1066. In this video, Arpita talks about prominent traits of Anglo Saxon Age & Old English poetry.

Where can I begin? I can begin by saying while English began as the language of several Germanic tribes, looking for opportunities in my island, it is now emphatically, an International Language. You are evidence of this. You are right to point out that English was influenced by the Ancient Britons. The Anglo-Saxons brought most of our basic vocabulary to England, plus their Germanic grammar. But the Britons, as they were learning Old English (Anglo-Saxon) tended to make mistakes. They tended to follow their own Celtic grammar. This is why English grammar is very different to other Germanic languages. Thank the Britons for our weird grammar.
It is not true to say that there was no great literature in the Anglo-Saxon period. Beowulf is great literature. There are also wonderful poems such as "The Wanderer" and "The Sea Farer" written in Anglo-Saxon times. Some significant literature survived. In Victorian times, it was believed that the Anglo-Saxons had killed all the Britons in England, but that is untrue. Some Victorians thought this had happened, and that it was a good thing. I disagree.
After the Norman Conquest, England was conquered by French speakers, who refused to speak English. However, they listened to or read, romantic stories about King Arthur, or about the lovers Tristan and Isolde, who were Britons, and spoke a Celtic language. Their stories were, of course, translated into French, but Beowulf was not.
