Missed the poll but to sum it up:

* IEM: portability + isolation - ISOLATION is the big word here. This is the reason why people think they "hear" more detail. Not that it's entirely true but because you're not distracted by external noise, you probably hear more detail.
* Classic earbud: portability + awareness - SAFER to use while commuting. You hear your environment, though you miss the isolation that an IEM provides. You'll also miss a lot of the bass that an IEM can produce.
* Closed-back headphone (wired, passive noise cancellation, or bluetooth + ANC) - COMFORT + ISOLATION (for ANC). Some people do not like anything sticking into their ears so this is the way to go. Better suited for electronic music too (big drivers + closed design = big bass). And some even have amazing sound stage (e.g. Beyerdynamic DT770, AKG K550, Sony WH-1000XM3). They are in the forefront of technology too as you can "fit" more tech into a bigger form factor (ANC, controls, DSP, etc.).
* Finally, open-back headphones - NATURAL SOUND. That sums it up. No other earphone and headphone can sound more natural than open-backs...simply because that's how we naturally hear, "openly". You see a concert, you hear openly. You watch a live performance, you hear openly. You watch a street performer, you hear openly. Simply talking to someone is an "open" hearing experience. :)

Got one of each at least - Grado SR80e (open-back), Shure SRH440 (closed-back), Nicehck DB3 (IEM). I ditched the classic earbud as an IEM sounds more "complete" overall due to that better low end.

P.S. I hope you get to review the new Drop THX Panda headphones soon (bluetooth + ANC). Hearing great things about it now, even at Head-fi. Also, if you can share tips on how to order and claim an item via Drop on that video, that would be great!

Thanks as always, brother!

I bought the OS1PRO and the 3.5mm connecter seems to have an extra line ( phone-mic I assume) I cannot get the mic to work if I plug into a PC desktop. Is it incompatible to the standard 3.5mm connector for the mic to worK?

Is there any review comparing CCA C12 with high-end TWS earbuds? for example Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, Bose QuietComfort or Sennheiser Momentum TWS 2? I'm thinking to buy earbuds, which is expensive. But worry if sound quality is lower than wired Chi-Fi

I only wear headphones when gaming because of its accuracy and sensitivity. But when I'm just listening music or casual binge watching, I use IEM than buds because of isolation and better quality than buds. And is very comfortable.

Great video and insight on the types of headfi gear. I’ve been using headphones ever since I became a head-fi in 2007. I use a closed back at the office (Beyerdynamic) and open back (Grado) at home. Now I am looking at my first IEM and looking at some Chifi brands. Looking at Moondrop star fields as my first IEM.

Some people (I'm one of them) can't use IEMs because of how they feel in their ears. Personally, I find them painful no matter what tips I use. I tried to buy IEMs several times but ended up giving them away, which is a pity because I like the portability and sound isolation they offer. My happy compromise are closed back on-ear headphones--they're not as big as over-ear ones (which I also use but only at home) and they sound good and offer decent isolation. However, since I discovered this channel a week ago and learned about Chinese-made earbuds I am now keen to try them and see if they're sonically better than the ones I used in the distant, pre-ChiFi past.

I only use iem on plane for sound isolation. Earbuds and headphone for daily. Koss KSC75 still counted as open back headphone right? 😂

IEMS sound very very good for low prices, but I can only recommend them if you are traveling or really need the portability. While it has the advantage of great sound for cheap, they can get gross quick due to earwax, pain, soundstage is compromised, and may fall out. The earwax is natural and wearing IEMs or earbuds can push the wax more in and cause abnormalities in your ear. Over-ear headphones weigh more, bulkier, and a bit more expensive to get similar sound quality. They provide lots of comfort, have soundstage, cleaner to use, and healthwise not as bad. I use earbuds for traveling and over-ear anywhere else.

My open-back headphones make me happy when I'm alone at home, in a quiet environment. But for everyday use? IEM's all the way. When I have people at home, I use my big speakers hahaha
