the most experience i have with a controller is playing Wii Sports so i'd 100% stay with mouse & keyboard

For me, KB+M significantly improves auto-target acquisition as well as evasive AND offensive assault boosting. However, controller is way better for multi-directional quick-boosting, quick turns and fluid movement while boosting. So there's a trade-off (at least for now).

I found clearing out areas easier on kbm but controller makes bosses easier because it’s easier to dodge precisely.

The only problem with mouse & keyboard is when you do hard-lock. Moving the mouse breaks the hard-lock, which can be bad for fast bosses like IBIS. So, when you do hard-lock with M&K, it's best to lift the mouse from the surface so that it doesn't break the hard-lock. I don't run hard-lock often but I actually turn my hand sideways (keeping the mouse in my hand) and rest the side of my hand on the desk when I do it.

A hotkey to switch between auto and manual sounds like it would be good.
It even makes sense that a mecha would have many switches and modes.
