Protestant Looks Into Catholicism: One Year Later

This video will be released exactly one year after the release of my video touring St. John Cantius, which not only changed the trajectory of my YouTube channel, but led me down a path of investigating the claims of Catholicism. This journey has put me in touch with some of the brightest Catholic apologists of our time, caused me to read some incredible books, and perhaps best of all it has allowed me to forge friendships with some wonderful people. After a year of thinking, praying, and wrestling, I find myself faced with some of the questions I was asking early on, albeit with greater clarity on the arguments from all sides. I'm not at a point of reaching conclusions, but I wanted to share an update with you all as you all have played such a large part in this journey. Thank you all for the love and support every step of the way.

About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a YouTube channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.

Hey everyone! I wanted to add a few thoughts here in the comments. First, thanks to all of you who have been so kind and supportive throughout this journey. The journey of investigation is by no means over. Rather, when I realized it had been a year since my tour at St. John Cantius, I thought it would be a fitting time for reflection. That is the occasion of this video, not any grand announcements. Second, there will be two more videos in this series. Next, I will make a video on one year of looking into Orthodox. That will be followed by a video on why I'm a Protestant. None of these will be conclusive. Rather, they're a glimpse into my thought process. Finally, I'd like to add that this is a very imperfect video. I have so many more thoughts than I could fit into this video. It is incomplete in both its appreciations and concerns. However, it was a video I knew I could record dozens of times and still not be happy with. In the end I decided to just upload it as it came out on the first take. Thanks in advance for your grace and kindness. With much love, Austin.

We love you brother! Keep up what you are doing. We are all still "looking into Catholicism" no matter how long we have been Catholic. It's one of the best parts about it.

Austin, I'm a young Catholic priest and I greatly admire your intellectual honesty. It's incredible to see how self-aware you are regarding how things around you may influence you, and how you are striving to remain in a pursuit of the Lord that is honest and true. Prayers for you, man. May the Lord bless you abundantly.

As a Catholic, I have great respect for your honest intellectual pursuit of theological truth.

I’m in the same boat. It started with “WHY do they [catholics] believe what they believe?” Now I’m on this obsessive rabbit trail, looking up answers to questions, realizing that a lot of it actually makes sense, but still having questions, etc. Praying for us who are seeking answers 🙏

My spiritual journey was: southern baptist, agnostic, atheist, Buddhist, new ager, non denominational Christian, then Catholic. Finally made it home haha

I'm a convert from Protestantism to Catholicism. I cannot imagine wrestling with the complexities of conversion with an audience following me! It's a huge cultural and theological shift and then there's the dynamics of friendships and family relationships. In the end, there came to be a point where I couldn't not be Catholic (if that makes sense). Jesus called me in the Eucharist and there was no denying him. If you are called to a conversion to Catholicism, it will be hard to ignore it. So there is really no need to add pressure to it. Congratulations on your wedding! Look forward to more videos when you have time!

I was raised Baptist. Starting reading history and that began my journey. Now go to Latin Mass every Sunday. Such a privilege to have found it

As a Catholic, I respect your decision friend, I'd still say that this is a step forward in bringing the division to unity and understanding. To GOD be the Glory!

Thank you for your honesty Austin! The first year or two after I became Catholic I often fell into the trap of thinking that it was simply a matter of people hearing/reading the right thing or finding out what the Church actually teaches (and what she is). But thankfully I have realised that conversion as well as faith is always a gift from God. I can maybe help people by rooting out misconceptions, and more importanly by living my life as a joyful witness to Christ, but at the end of the day we have to let the Holy Spirit work in the hearts of all of us and be obedient and attentive to him whereever we are at.

God bless you son. My younger son just converted to Catholicism and I’m just trying to find truth. I’m a Christian. I know we both are in Christ. Thank you for sharing and being so transparent.

Respect for you, brother. Rarely do I encounter a Protestant with an open mind like yours and who doesn’t attack Catholicism.
I’m a cradle Catholic who only just began going deeper in my faith. Not for anything but I just want to share that the conversion story of Scott Hahn has inspired me a lot in my faith journey. It’s amazing how it took a convert like him to make me appreciate the Catholic faith like never before.
Anyway, I’m glad I came across your videos. God bless you!

And you still don't owe anyone anything Austin. Wherever you land throughout your lifetime, I'm sure it'll be because you had a heart for Christ and were/are searching for Truth. Take care always and God Bless your journey. From a Catholic.

I was 14 when I attended my first Mass. I married a Catholic and remained Protestant until I was 36. It took the Holy Spirit a long time to work on me. But, He did and I happily joined the Church. I didn’t struggle with the Papacy. I did struggle with Mary and it took another ten years or so until I could truly recognize Mary as my spiritual mother. If you are meant to become Catholic, it will happen no matter your doubts.

Regardless of where you're at, I want to thank you for hosting all of these interviews. As a protestant with a reformed background, there is a LOT of anxiety that has accompanied me looking into this stuff, and your channel has really helped a ton. You don't know how much of blessing you've been and will continue to be. Thank you, Austin!

I’m a Catholic, and in a Motorcycle Ministry. However, I might leave. Simply because every one of these bikers has a huge problem with me being Catholic (I don’t keep this secret, because I’m not ashamed of it). Most feel compelled to try to “Save Me!” It’s like when people give you advice you don’t need, and never asked for. I was an alter boy, I love the mother church, cause it’s the road I traveled that caused me to fall in love with Jesus . I’m very happy with my denomination, but born again Christians think it’s their duty to literally drag you away from Catholicism, and to save you. Oh well, all I know is I will never leave Catholicism.

It took me 38 years as a evangilical before I came into full communion with the Catholic Church at the age of 60. I am 69 now. I was very involved in ministry as a lay person. I spoke in many churches of all flavors, taught apologetics at YWAM, and tried to get the churches to work together at a city level in affect the culture. Since it took me that long, I understand that the journey is long and costly. I will leave it up to you and the Holy Spirit as to if and when you enter the Catholic Church. I hope you don't mind that I pray that you do. We need minds like yours to evangelize Catholics who do not know their faith and do not have the zeal that many Protestants have.

I attended Catholic services for 15 years before converting, was married to a Catholic man for 12 years of those 15. I was born & raised Protestant. Have various family members whom are Catholic, Baptist, and Protestant. A best friend whom is Nondenominational. My father told me the other day while I applied Holy Water to his forehead before surgery; you are fully Catholic now, not a lick of Protestant in you. I smiled & said, yes, yes I am.
For anyone who converts; their journey is different from another. If you convert, welcome😊. If not, I can understand & pray the Lord guides you in all ways. Congrats on your upcoming marriage, may it be deeply blessed.

Hey Austin, I never comment on anything but felt the need to express my appreciation for your channel here. Your channel started to take off around the same time I started to have my own crisis of faith about my conversion from Catholicism to Protestant Christianity. I appreciate this video in particular because I have seen many debates and read a few books from people who are settled in their convictions and you can't help but feel the urgency to be as settled as they are and have all your questions answered. I confess I have been that guy who has been blown about with every wind of doctrine - going to Anglican, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Non-denom churches; visiting Catholic masses like yourself; and meeting with priests and pastors just to talk it out. It is a difficult trial to live through and if I ever saw you irl I'd buy you a beer (or coffee), shake your hand, or something. With all the polemics and polarization in the world especially on the internet, you stand as one of the few reasonable voices out there.

God bless you, your marriage, your family, and your ministry. I stand with you in your Protestant convictions. Keep up your work! I'm sure there are many like myself who watch but remain silent though your videos are a great help.
