The simulation theory fits with every taoist, buddhist and even what the one who people called Christ taught. But, the thing is that there is no outside, it's nothingness becomes everything. This nothingness is not thin air or something simple that many would imagine, it's profound and absolute infinity. Nothingness is the only thing, if I may call it such has the attributes of what the hardcore mystics would call God. It's absolutely infinite in every way possible. And the best thing is that me, you, him, her, it, we, they, us. All is identical on the existential level. So all is the I am that I am.
So this nothingness you could call consciousness or the simulator. And it's purpose is being.

Seems Elon is vey commited to the simulation idea, can't blame him it has logical merit. Though what surprises me is his willingness to talk about it, specially given that we may never know the truth, so there is nothing for him in it. He won't get to say 'see I told you'. That at least says he is sincere and that he doesn't care that much of what people think.

Outside any simulation is the Mind/Soul (as well as the coding of the Simulation the question refers to).
Mind/Soul + Information = Consciousness. Mind/Soul is fundamental (and transcendent, non-physical). Mind is in interaction with the Program (Simulation), on the highest level, and is in symbiotic relationship with it on all levels (down to the lowest) This Program (which is also transcendent) the Mind decodes and interprets as our 'physical universe' (matter-energy-space-time). The result of decoding it is Consciousness, which is synergistic, so fragments of the MInd (as individual human minds/souls) are conscious and processing information under various conditions and in different states. Therefore, Consciousness is manifesting matter and energy (not the opposite, as many misguided scientists wrongly believe).
The metaphysical truth is that all of the physical universe is an 'illusion' resulting from consciousness (an interaction of mind/soul with a transcendent Program), .If the experience is temporarily shared (by a group of minds/souls during some 'psychic merge'), we have a 'group experience' (of the same shared consciousness)... And all experiences and memories (of individual minds/souls, during their 'lifetime') are stored in the Akashic Fields, which are the database of this Simulation ('physical universe')... Mind/soul is the 'driver', form/avatar/body is the 'vehicle'.

Why would the simulation be real? We don`t make ours real, we just have arrays of numbers, computation and visualization of the outcome. We don`t actually make sounds while makins sound-recognition nerual networks. We just represent them with the frequencies. We just have arrays of numbers. There`s a conflation of representation and reality in this theory. Derealization went so far as to forgot the main feature of reality - actual existence.
