The netherlands has fluoride in the drinking water but very small ammounts.
Edit to that: it's fluoride that occurs naturally, it's not added.
In the USA the biden administration put money towards replacing lead pipes. I think that has a way bigger health impact than the tiny amount of fluoride to be honest.

You are writing, producing and researching these topics AND present them better than most professional(!) public or private production companies do. They use at least 15 people (SvT's own figure) to research, write, put together/ produce and present content... while you do it perfectly well yourself. You are one in ten million with all these talents. I am speachless.

Breakfast cereal manufacturers in the US add colouring that is banned in Canada and Europe. Yet the same manufacturers don't add them when they send their product to Canada.

I'm an American that lived in Germany for 19 years (2003 - 2022) in Konstanz, but had to move back to take care of my family. One of the biggest shocks was readjusting my taste buds to American made food and drinks. When my mother bought a cake and I took a bite, I felt my teeth scream for their lives. Our foods are so over-sugared, it has so much seasoning, its really hard to get used to it again, even though I used to consume this stuff without being bothered by it. We definitely have a very weird, sometimes even perverted approach to food production. We went to an "Italian" restaurant, and what they sell as pizza, would be considered an insult in Italy. I guess its the same with water.

On another note, how is your German coming along? I remember just before I left, you made a 24 hour speaking German video, some 3 years ago... how is it now? I'm sure you all improved a lot.

It's basically the problem with most studies around food and drinks, that they are nearly always just observatory and often miss to factor all factors, that could also change the results, into the results.

A data point to this discussion from Finland.
Excerpt from an article in a Finnish medical journal from 2021:

In Finland, fluoridation of drinking water is no longer a topical issue. Kuopio was the first city in the Nordic countries to start fluoridating drinking water in 1959. However, this was stopped due to residents' opposition in 1992, and drinking water has not been fluoridated elsewhere in Finland. The fluoridation of drinking water in Kuopio proved to be beneficial for dental health until the 1970s, but not after that. The abolition of fluoridation also had no effect on children's dental health. The reason for this was the widespread use of systematic dental care and other fluoride products such as fluoride toothpaste. Elsewhere, on the other hand, it has been found that the cessation of drinking water fluoridation increases the costs of dental caries and its treatment, especially in children from a lower socioeconomic status. The relative benefit of drinking water fluoridation for dental health therefore depends on the environment.

In Finland, the fluoride intake of expectant mothers, including the use of fluoride products for caries control, according to the instructions, is safe. The amount of drinking water used and its fluoride content should of course be taken into account. Despite the fact that the hypothesis of the harmful effects of drinking water fluoridation on neurological development cannot be confirmed in the light of current knowledge, the benefits and harms of both local and systemic fluoride use must be constantly monitored carefully.

I think there is the stance that Flouride is more effective when applied ON the tooth than when ingested.
So the idea to add it to toothpaste (which is not swallowed) seems to combine the optimal effect with eliminating potential health risks from ingesting too much Flouride.

Scotland is different from the rest of the uk in that we don’t add fluoride to our wate. The Scottish Water website states:

In Scotland no public drinking water supply is currently fluoridated and naturally occurring fluoride, in general, is less than 0.1 mg/l

In Calgary, Alberta, Canada there was a decision to remove the fluoride from the water in 2011. After the fluoride was removed there were a couple studies done to compare the dental heath of people in the city, especially children. There was a significant increase in cavities and an overall decline in dental health. In the last election there was a question on the ballot if the city should reinstate fluoride to the water and it won with 62%. The reintroduction of fluoride is supposed to be finished in early 2025.

In Finland we have too much fluoride in the natural well water at least in the Kotka region, and older people who spent their childhood there show signs of dental fluorosis. It's mostly harmless, but out of caution people are advised to not drink well water in that region and especially to not give it to children whose permanent teeth are still developing.

What proportion of public water is used for drinking/cooking?
Most of it goes for flushing toilet, irrigation, showers, washing clothes and dishes.
Only a minuscule part is actually consumed. Adding floride to it to get ingested is extremely wasteful and a source of pollution to the rest of the water.
There are better ways going directly in the body like you mentioned, toothpastes, pills, ...

The fact that many European countries even started removing chlorine from tap is insane. Although it is more expensive to invest in UV and ozone filters to replace the old chlorine disinfectant, it is cheaper in the long term. When you use tap, the water should be cold, fresh, without any smell or colour. And of course. Without any lead or fluoride, or iron or other chemicals.

I live in the US & even though we had fluoride in the water supply, my son still had many issues & even had to have treatments at the dentist. I think having it in the water supply is an antiquated idea, same as daylight savings. We need to seriously look at these things that were started in a completely different era & find out if they are still working or not.

In Poland in school I had "fluoryzacja" (fluorization) that was using special toothpaste once per month. It was never in water!

I work in water treatment in Louisiana. We stopped fluoridating in 2002, but there is already some in our source water. We were dosing to reach between 1.4 and 1.6 PPM. The last time I checked a few years back it was at around 0.4 to 0.7 PPM. I'm just glad we don't have to deal with it anymore!

Part of the "reduction" of tooth decay in Europe is due to changes in dentistry. 40 years ago there was a lot of "preemptive" drilling and filling of "cavities" that now only result in a stern look and a recommendation to floss more often.
