If an owner chooses to live in an expensive home within 3-5 miles of the coast where 90% of hurricane damage occurs, then maybe an increase is warranted. However, insurance companies better not increase rates further inland on lower risk properties to help subsidizes the losses of the wealthy who choose to live in high risk areas.

We have a block house in SW Florida. We haven’t had insurance since 2017 when Irma hit. If we need to replace roof we will be responsible. We’ve saved close to $30k since then so it’s a risk we chose to take. Our next door neighbor paid $5500 last year and that doesn’t include the other scam…flood insurance.

I own my home, and I stopped paying insurance. If something happens, I will pay for the bil don't get hurricanes every season in Florida, but that is my opinion.

Local municipalities are mostly to blame. They have allowed people to build homes in places that should not have homes. Those homes that have been built in inappropriate locations over the past 50 years should never have been built let alone insured. We are basically all paying for rich new yorkers winter and beach houses to be rebuilt every 10 years. The owners of these properties need to post a bond of self insurance. The state government has nothing to do with the cause of the actual problem.

Florida allows contractors power of attorney if homeowners sign off. The contractors push hard for this then pad the work order.
"Impartial" third party assessors come straight from the construction industry and pad the work order.
As a homeowner, if I pull permits myself and sub out the work, insurance pays 10% less than if I contract a general contractor to do that for me - which forces me into the issues stated above.
The system needs to be fixed.
