Boating Basics - Helpful Navigation Marker Minder for Red & Green Buoys

When boating in most waterways of North America, the 'Red Right Return Rule' means that one must keep the red buoys to the starboard side & the green ones to port side of the vessel when heading upstream, or back to port. Of course, that would be opposite when traveling downstream.

A convenient way to remember which is which when underway is by using one of these neat little 'Marker Minders'. Available in a number of different configurations, they are a handy and inexpensive way to keep your mind on where you should be :-)

So how do color blind boaters deal with all these color markers? do they just run over the buoys to avoid hitting anything?

I've decided not to have one of the marker minders, as I fear that it will get left in the wrong orientation, and relied upon at the wrong moment... Intersecting bays, with marker colour reversals add a little spice to the scene as well...
We have lots of occasions to only encounter one marker or buoy, and the wrong decision can be bad anywhere, but here on the Bay especially. Many new members get added to the 'Granite Club' each weekend. Even saw it last weekend, with few boats on the water, albeit not a marker position issue, just bad captaining...  ;-)
