ADULTHOOD. All children grow up. Become adults. In western societies people are considered adults when they reach the ages between 18 and 20. But every society has its own convictions, its own standards and its own balances. Which are very different from those of the western world.

BODY. In Kenya, in the year 2014, girls from 6 to 15 years of age, are being "cut". 85% of them undergo total mutilation of their external genitalia for non medical reasons. The mutilation comprises the excision of the clitoris, as well as of the inner and outer lips. Long before the completion of their growth, girls get in line, side by side, and undergo this operation, without any anesthetic or analgesic and under conditions of no hygiene. With the same blade, with no kind of sterilization, all of them will be "cut". Some will die of bleeding, some will get HIV.

SOUL. FGM is a turning point in the life of a woman. From the moment it happens, everything takes its course towards "life as an adult". She will leave school, she will get married, she will serve her husband and meet all his needs. She will find her position in society. Convictions related to FGM are so deeply rooted that there is no cry for help and any show of discomfort is limited to the least.
Which is the psychological limit where a conviction becomes oppression or even shreds into pieces a person's soul (and body)?

ΕΝΗΛΙΚΙΩΣΗ. Όλα τα παιδιά μεγαλώνουν. Και ενηλικιώνονται.
Στις δυτικές κοινωνίες θεωρείται ότι ο άνθρωπος ενηλικιώνεται μεταξύ 18-20 ετών.
Κάθε κοινωνία όμως έχει τις δικές της πεποιθήσεις, τα δικά της πρότυπα, τις δικές της ισορροπίες. Που είναι πολύ διαφορετικές από αυτές του δυτικού κόσμου.

ΣΩΜΑ. Στην Κένυα του 2014, τα κορίτσια από 6 έως 15 ετών «κόβονται». Το 85% από αυτά υφίστανται ολικό ακρωτηριασμό εξωτερικών γεννητικών οργάνων για μη ιατρικούς λόγους. Ο ακρωτηριασμός αφορά την εκτομή της κλειτορίδας, καθώς και των μικρών και μεγάλων χειλέων του αιδοίου. Πολύ πριν ολοκληρωθεί η ανάπτυξή τους, τα κορίτσια μπαίνουν στη σειρά, το ένα δίπλα στο άλλο και υφίστανται την επέμβαση, χωρίς το παραμικρό αναισθητικό ή παυσίπονο και σε συνθήκες υγιεινής ανύπαρκτες. Με το ίδιο λεπίδι, το οποίο δεν έχει περάσει από κανενός είδους αποστείρωση, θα «κοπούν» όλες. Κάποιες θα πεθάνουν από αιμορραγία, κάποιες θα μολυνθούν από HIV.

ΨΥΧΗ. Η κλειτοριδεκτομή είναι σημείο αναφοράς στη ζωή μιας γυναίκας. Από τη στιγμή που θα συμβεί, όλα παίρνουν το δρόμο προς τον «ενήλικο βίο». Θα αφήσει το σχολείο, θα παντρευτεί, θα υπηρετήσει και εξυπηρετήσει τον άντρα της στις ανάγκες του. Θα βρει τη θέση της στην κοινωνία.
Οι πεποιθήσεις που συνδέονται με την κλειτοριδεκτομή είναι τόσο βαθιά ριζωμένες ώστε δεν υπάρχει έκκληση για βοήθεια και η δυσφορία είναι σε περιορισμένη κλίμακα.
Ποιό είναι άραγε το ψυχολογικό όριο στο οποίο μία πεποίθηση καταπιέζει ή ακόμα και κατακερματίζει την ψυχή (και το σώμα) ενός ανθρώπου;
