You've probably seen WiFi 7 around more and more but is it worth the upgrade from WiFi 6 or 6E? Here's the real differences so you can decide.

If all you're doing is streaming and gaming in a small family household, a Wi-Fi 5 mesh system is still enough. If you're downloading a ton, sure Wi-Fi 7 should be in the shortlist, but... Wi-Fi 7 supported devices are still slowly trickling out, so people should make sure if their devices support it first; otherwise, Wi-Fi 6E is a good budget option for heavy downloaders with relatively new devices.

Well done video, but doesn't mention one important fact with mesh systems: If you don't have wired connections to all the nodes, any node using the mesh will be using the same band to send your data to the nearest mesh node with a wired connection. This will significantly impact your speeds, this balances against the fact that you can position a mesh node wherever needed to fill in bad signal areas. As with all things, it's a balance.

In October 2023, I purchased the Xiaomi BE7000 with WiFi 7. Currently, I have 0 WiFi 7 devices and only three WiFi 6 devices out of several dozen. Almost all smart sensors, plugs, and cameras are still on 2.4GHz.

Even my new Honor X14 Plus 2024 laptop still uses WiFi 6...

Of course, it always makes sense to buy the latest technologies.

P.S.
And the saddest part is that, despite having a fiber-optic connection, I’m still limited to up to 1Gbps...

Wi-Fi 7 is crazy expensive you can get Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E like I have with my Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro 6E Mesh System for half the Price and it's just as good in my opinion. The downside to Wi-Fi 7 is that most Devices even Newer Devices only support Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Until they come down on the Price of Wi-Fi 7 I won't be Upgrading to it.

Notes: Avoid Wi-Fi 6e hardware
6e never received a proper schedule of updates, and to this day, many 6e products are buggy.
Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-FI 7 are the two viable products.
To build a proper Wi-Fi 7 network, see below.
1) If you're wiring a house or new construction, Wi-Fi 7 requires CAT 6a
2) Wi-Fi 7 stand-alone access points are about 40% more expensive than Wi-Fi 6 (Truly more speed for more money)
3) To maximize Wi-Fi 7 performance, a 2.5 Gbps switch with ample PoE+ port power is the minimum switch speed requirement.
4) And, of course, a 2.5 Gbps Router is also the minimum speed.

If you're going to use an All-in-One device like the one being reviewed in this video (which he calls a Router, but it is actually a Router, a Switch and an Access Point all in one)
This video is perfect for All-in-one system information.

These upcoming speeds are insane. While the hardware might be getting cheaper the cable companies monthly service fees won’t be. Then, eventually we’ll be forced to switch even if we’re happy at our current speeds. I highly doubt they’ll offer any discount rates for them.

I still have a Wi-Fi five system from 2019. It’s an. Eero it still gets the full speed from my ISP, which is spectrum and recently they bumped out to 400 Mbps. I don’t find Wi-Fi seven necessary.

MLO is the biggest reason I would want WIFI 7. I am still on WIFI5 but will probably upgrade to 7 in 2026

So Wi-Fi 7 would be mainly for the Modem sending out the signal? No need to up upgrade receiving devices like computer, laptop, iPad or phones?

Faster speeds and larger channel width all use up valuable battery life on your devices. I set my network as WiFi 6 ax with 80mhz channels. That gets a top speed of around 600mbps, which is more than enough. Sure I could widen the channel or put it on 320mhz WiFi 7, but it will kill the battery life. In addition, the larger the channel width, the more chance you'll suffer from interference, especially if you are competing with neighbours for spectrum. I put all low bandwidth, smart home and non essential devices on an oldschool 2.4ghz WiFi 5 20mhz band. Our internet is 1gbps and the desktop PC's and games consoles are wired in via ethernet. The 600mbps limit for the WiFi6 prevents any device from oversaturating the internet and causing buffer bloat. This is a massive benefit as it means we don't need to use QoS. We are using the limitations of 80mhz WiFi6 in our favour.

Keep in mind that many end devices still use the lower standards (WiFi 5 or below) and will not see much of any advantage, but... I'm on an aged 802.11ac (WiFi 5) AmpliFi HD 3-node mesh system that is goin to be replaced with a newly introduced Firewalla AP7 2-node mesh. Not only does it have WiFi 7, but integrated firewall support for VLANs and VqLANs and inserts into the Firewalla system seamlessly... a huge uplift in security IMHO. True network segmentation and I'm early-access beta testing it starting next week (secure, semi-secure/mobile, IoT and guest networks).

My Amplifi mesh used wireless backhaul and had issues at times requiring regular reboots... I hope are solved my the Firewalla AP7 wireless backhaul, but I plan to use CAT6 anyway down the road when I can pull the cables. I prefer to cable critical connections.

I find it amusing how people see these speeds and completely ignore their ISP is likely nowhere near providing them with that much bandwidth to be shared within their home network. if you are sending DIRECT between devices then there's that, but I challenge you to realize that is hardly ever the case.
