I love how the captain isn't being manipulative or altruistic, he's being honest and professional, he'll get Issac to where he wants to go and asks for cash like any business and politely reminds Issac that he should get paid cause his crew and him are providing a service. He has faith and goes by the honor system.
Dude is just a trustworthy and smart businessman

HOLY crap, I just realized, Isaac did what Draculas wife was constantly hoping he would do, travel the world to experience the bad and the good, in hopes he would become a man again.

Best barterer in the world. Talked him down from "Kill you and take your ship" to "pay you to transport us"

Never give a practitioner of magic your name. Captain knows this well

Everyone needs a eye opening conversation with a Jamaican sea captain. One of those right of passage things.

1:36 I just realised that Isaac is surprised when the captain says that Isaac's word would be enough of a guarantee for his crew's safety. Its a good contrast to the guard captain that didn't listen.

Now this is how you deal with dangerous supernatural situations.

Outstanding voice work by Lance Reddick ( The Wire, John Wick) as the Captain. The most memorable minor character of the season.

This proves that the best way to persuade Isaac is to be someone of honor, trust and integrity. Isaac loves good people whether he understands it at this point in the story or not.

What the captain did right here is brilliant. He's using his skills, service & his manpower as a bargaining chip. The money here is neutral, and therefore is a sign of trust between them.

He made sure Isaac goals and him are aligned, Isaac gets to go where he wants to go and he gets paid. When the people of aligned goals stay on literally on the same boat, there is no conflict of interest.

Wise captain.

The captain changed Isaac. Because he was the first human that didn't immediately result to violence when confronted by him. Instead, he chose to talk. He treated Isaac like an equal, like a human.

"I could take your boat"
"You could, but what if you didn't?"

Somewhere on that ship, a man who had sailed with the Captain a long time nudged a terrified newer sailor, smiled, and said, “just watch. We’ll be fine.”

Two things about this scene always bear mention on a repeat viewing.

1. Isaac never told the captain he was a forgemaster, yet the captain already knew, despite later claiming it was new info to him.

2. He didn't release the handshake at the end until Isaac promised the safety of him and his crew.

Indeed he is a "shrewd captain" as isaac puts it.

I love how they didn’t give him a name it may seem quite lazy to give such a amazing character not a name but i think its more symbolic not giving a name to a person that can change someone like issaac with a simple discussion it shows that it shouldn’t matter who they are but what they could do to change a person the captain basically symbolizes people that are at the most random times could help change the right people
