In general we would recommend applying a light mist spray of water prior to rendering to ensure the dry, thirsty brickwork does not draw too much moisture from the render on the brickwork.
 
Other substrates may require a primer but this will vary depending on the surface being rendered. Conditions for this can be found on the product datasheet

What is an alternative to the mixer if you don’t have one please? Can you mix it throughly enough with some thing else?
