Most people won't come within a thousand miles of winning an Olympic gold medal in their lifetimes, which makes it all the more remarkable when some incredible athletes go home with more than one. Some of these Olympic athletes took the top honors in literally dozens of events, marking them as being truly the best of the best.

Across decades of competition and many different events, some athletes have distinguished themselves by pulling ahead of the pack to leave not just one, but multiple marks on Olympic history. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Paavo Nurmi carried the Torch into the stadium to light the Olympic Flame. It wasn't announced beforehand and when he ran into the stadium the crowd recognised his distinctive stride. They went absolutely nuts!
