Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X -- a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. I know everybody jumps to "it's a man-eating fungus, get away" but if you follow the plot of the movie it's explained that the shimmer just randomly changes the DNA of every living thing. So basically this guy just drew the short straw and got turned into an overgrown colony of fungus instead of a badass mutant or an alien clone lol

The fact they were able to make this thing look like an Eldritch skull on fire, plumbing smoke AND also have it look clearly like fungi is a work of set-design majestry!

I read somewhere that the soldier was not exactly dead, he became one with the fungi parasite, so technically he was still alive and trapped in that "thing". Truly terrifying if I must say

I caught this movie in the theater when it came out, and it just occurred to me now that given the way the Shimmer works there's actually a decent chance that part of this guy lives on in the parasitic mold, aware but totally immobilized and unable to communicate or signal this team for help. Yikes.

People pointing out the stupid decisions made by characters in this movie seem to forget that each one of them was depressed and suicidal and going through relentless cellular change down to their very DNA

The worst part for me is that we have no clue how fast this went:
It could be that this was nearly instant and he panicked a bit while his entire body started to deform. However, what could be more horrifying is that this was actually slowly happening, and he was having an agonizing death seeing his body slowly shift and tear apart giving birth to something completely new that would take him down as well
