My Navy Recruiter in Nashville, TN ended up in my Squadron on board the USS Independence, CVA-62. In our Change of Command Ceremony we also had Promotions where my recruiter was promoted to Chief Petty Office. When I went up to him and introduced myself, the first thing he asked me was "Did I lie to you about anything?" I told him he did not. Chief Lee was a good Sailor and a good Man.

Petty is believed to be derived from the french word "petit". So a petty officer would be a "petit" officer in ranking.

On my Submarine (back in the mid 1980's), we had a "shit hot" Nuclear Electrician's Mate Chief... he made E-7 in 7 years...
E-3 upon entry
E-4 upon completing "A" School
E-5 with STAR re-enlistment after 1 year
then nailed E-6 and E-7 advancements on the screws...

Then he got busted for Coke possession... and BEAT THE CHARGES in General Court Martial...
(How? Nobody knows... maybe an awesome lawyer... but we all knew he was a coke head)

I never heard what happened to him after 1987, but I have no doubt that he was probably blocked from ever getting E-8

This is the exact information I have been interested in since I joined actually. It paints the picture on board a lot better than any recruiter/classifier etc. ever told me.

Thanks for this!

My best friend is in the Coast Guard Reserves (former active duty) and is currently an E-8 (Senior Chief). He is ranking up to E-9 (Master Chief) in October. I remember helping him study for the E-PME for E-8 while we were working together (law enforcement). He had to pass that just to take the servicewide evaluation. I think the ranking system is pretty similar for the Navy and CG. From what he says E-9 is as high as he can go.

I love the Halo theme songs in your videos. Reminds me of the RDC Outlaw. 8 count in the Laundry Room with the dryer going....Get there. :)

Petty Officer- from the age of sail, were considered sailors with some sort of specialty, carpenters, sailmakers etc. the word petty comes from the French "petit" meaning little. So Petty Officers were "little officers" between the ordinary and leading seaman, and the warrant and commissioned officers.

The word Petty means small, and an Officer is a high ranking military member. Hence the name Petty Officer, or in simpler terms 'Small Officer' but not necessarily a legitimate Officer lol

Do you know the difference between an E-9 Marine Sergeant who thinks he's God and an E-9 Navy Chief? The E-9 Navy Chief knows he's God.

Dude. The ratings fuck me up so hard. Ex-Army working for the Navy Reserve as a civil servant. Jesus. The ratings. Y'all have WAY have too many uniforms too. Again (I've commented on other vids), I REALLY appreciate your videos because they help me understand the lingo (still laughing about showerbabies). If I'm ever at a class near you, the beers are on my tdy pay man. :D
