About 20 years ago when I had an '02 GTI 1.8T that I was turning into a drag car. I took the rear seat backs out and couldn't believe how heavy they were. Like, almost 90lbs. The way they installed, it turns out they ended up being "structural" in terms of stiffening the car. I ended up having to put a rear strut bar in the car because it just felt unstable at any speed over about 60mph. Luckily, the strut bar weighed maybe 5 or 6lbs total since it was just a straight piece of 3/4" chromoly and some 1/4" steel tabs. Bone stock on drag radials, that car ran 13.9's, with the weight out it ran 13.4's, and still stock turbo, but with a tune, open downpipe, and a clutch/flywheel it ran 12.8's. Ended up running 10.5's when it was all said and done on slicks and skinnies.
