As computers get easier to use and more people are using computers from a young age you'd think that computer literacy would increase, well in some instances that may not actually be the case.

Hi, your videos have lots of tearing issues. I've tried it on YouTube with hardware acceleration and MPV player with VAAPI decoding. There must be something wrong with the video editing.

"Where did you save it?" "In Word"

Zoomers are the new boomers.

As a zoomer I have to say that this pleases me because I am considered 80th percentile simply by knowing how to find the Documents folder

It can be very frustrating to deal with family members when you need to help them with their computer because you're the "techy" in the family and you tell them to "open the web browser" and they struggle with that (not an over exaggeration, real story)
That's all i have to comment about this

This was actually amazing to me when I realized it.
You'd think people who grew up with computers present in every facet of their lives would be more technology literate but many actually come across like they've had half their brain cells removed.

I've talked to 15-year olds who do not understand the concept of typing a URL to visit a web site in a browser because there's an app for everything.
"I dunno, it seems so complicated to type all that weird text and the way everything is presented is confusing so I just use the app on my phone."

These days I often feel like a wizard, and am basically regarded as such for such basic things as accessing the BIOS on a computer, editing the Windows registry or watching Youtube without ads. FFS these aren't even technical skills. I'm afraid that if they ever see me using a console they'll suffer a seizure.

I am now almost the age my parents were when I first started to help them out with tech stuff, yet the kids that're now the age I was then STILL need the same level of help that my parents did 25 years ago.

No wonder tech companies keep boning us three ways from Sunday, there's almost nobody literate enough to see through the sham.

I remember as a freshman in high school I had this one friend who didn't know the difference between a computer and a monitor. Of course I laughed REALLY hard when I found that out lol

I knew it! Zoomers and boomers are two sides of the same coin

At this point seems like my grandma can operate a computer better than a good portion of my classmates like they don’t even know how to minimize or maximize a window

It will become increasingly weird being one of those born between the 90's and early 2000's as more and more generations are introduced to tech by smartphones.

Our generation grew up during the boom of personal computers as we know today, internet, gaming. Our day to day lives teached us how to use these new tools, many of us became the "Techies" of the family, having to tech our parents and elders how to use PCs and the Internet properly.

Now we are witnessing the damage of the dumbed down vision for an OS and the Web Steve Jobs had in 2007. As the 2010's generation reaches teenager years, we have the first generation of people raised by social media, super simplified UIs of phones and touch screens.

I can't say it's a good thing really, understanding the concept of files and folders is pretty essential to doing almost any job that has you using a computer.
Younger people not understanding basic computing concepts like this is only putting themselves at a disadvantage. It's all well and good that a phone can fulfill all the personal uses without understanding it, but you're not going to be using Android or iOS at an office job.

I don't know what a folder is.. some weird DOS concept. All I see is directories 😎

I did a computer science course(4 years ago) and out of 15 students I was oldest and the only Linux user. Most of the others were young Windows gamer types who barely knew anything computer related and most struggled with the concepts required.

The problem with how other people use computers is that if most people's usage pattern is something very weird or stupid, future computers and interfaces will be designed for that usage pattern.

Example - nowadays everybody just assumes you have a smartphone and you like installing applications for every activity you do no matter whether it is related to computers (e.g. going to the museum). Also, everybody assumes the smartphone is your primary device and you do everything on it including accessing bank accounts.

2004 zoomer here,
I got to know what file structure, compression and unpacking means because of torrenting and pirating PSP games

Wow, tech illiteracy is a bigger problem than I thought if people seriously don't know what a folder is. Its sad really that people can use a computer without knowing what it does.

There are some people in my software engineer degree that are absolutely lost and I wonder how the hell did they end up here. Like people that have their desktop full of icons and every time they open a web browser a pop up apears for some virus they installed. Fascinating creatures.

I was an undergraduate in history and a lot of my classmates (about 2/3) who didn't understand how a PC worked couldn't do physical nor virtual archival research. when you don't understand the basic structres of file systems or an archive and refuse to learn and opt to rely on search tools it can become a huge issue in more areas than just the tech field

Well yeah, that's because Zoomers dont really use traditional computers anymore, with the exception of PC Gamers.
The ordinary Zoomer knows how to use iOS or Android in the way they need to fullfill their desires, that's about it.

I actually think organizing stuff by _what they are_ is almost always the worst way to organize anything. You should organize by context. Organizing things by putting them into buckets of file types is like a library organizing books into buckets of paperbacks and hardcovers, then by total number of pages. Utterly useless.
