Text: Isaac Watts

The Lord my Shepherd is,
I shall be well supplied;
Since He is mine, and I am His,
What can I want beside?

He leads me to the place
Where heavenly pasture grows,
Where living waters gently pass,
And full salvation flows.

If e’er I go astray,
He doth my soul reclaim;
And guides me in His chosen way,
For His most holy name.

While He affords His aid,
I cannot yield to fear;
Though I should walk through death’s dark shade,
My Shepherd will be there.

In spite of all my foes,
Thou dost my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy anoints my head.

The bounties of Thy love
Shall crown my following days;
Nor from Thy house will I remove,
Nor cease to speak Thy praise.

(Psalm 23)

What a beautifully fitting tune that is! Psalm 23 is one of my favorite psalms and this tune did it justice. The Lord of heaven and earth is every bit as deserving of the best that we can offer to praise Him!

what can I want beside?

He leads me to the place
where beautiful pasture grows,
where living waters gently pass,
and full salvation flows.

If e’er I go astray,
he will my soul reclaim,
and guide me in his own right way
for his most holy Name.

While He affords His aid,
I cannot yield to fear;
Though I should walk through death's dark shade,
My Shepherd will be there.

In sight of all my foes
you will a table spread:
my cup with blessings overflows,
and joy exalts my head.

The bounties of your love
shall crown my following days;
nor from your house will I remove,
nor cease to speak your praise!

Whilst there are many metrical versions of the 23rd Psalm, to my knowledge this is the only one in short meter – and there is certainly something gained by way of tidiness in the shorter first line.

Does anyone know the tune name and if it’s in any other tune/hymn book than the Psalms & hymns of reformed worship?
