this music video invokes a combination of religious, militaristic, and sadomasochistic imagery. gaga described this as “homoerotic military” a mixture of masculine and feminine energy all in one.

Gaga was always on a whole different level. The song, choreography, fashion, artistic vision, her voice... she is the artist of this generation

She has always been ahead of her time. Her music from the 2000s could literally have released today and it would fit in contemporary music

the fact that gaga revolutionized the music industry at that time 😭

Gaga is a once in a lifetime artist. She changed culture. The music landscape morphed to try to fit her image. All major pop music artists changed their image and sound to try to fit into what she tapped into. Major media networks had specials for her music video debuts. She was a pop meteor that hit earth to make music/music videos, art, fashion and media exciting again. She helped put a hug spotlight on the LGBTQ+ communities plight like no other artist since the 80s/90s. She truly reinvented the super fan and deserves all of the adulation and credit and love that she gets. She is simply amazing even to this day. Love her forever.

The video was inspired by the Broadway musical Cabaret (1966), anti-fascism, religion, BDSM, sexual violence and the gay scene in 1920s Berlin.

It is about the "purity of my friendships with my gay friends, and how I've been unable to find that with a straight man in my life. It's a celebration and an admiration of gay love—it confesses my envy of the courage and bravery they require to be together. In the video I'm pining for the love of my gay friends—but they just don't want me to be with them."

Although Poker Face was my introduction to Lady Gaga, Bad Romance was my Monster awakening, but Alejandro was my inner-true-self awakening
I still remember the rollout of Bad Romance, Telephone, to Alejandro
What a timeless song! Timeless EP, if you will. The Fame Monster will go down as one of the best EPs of all time

In this music video Gaga criticizes the discrimination of the LGBT+ community in the military (Don’t ask, don’t tell) and the Church/religion. That’s why she used military outfits, homoeroticism and Catholic references. A very hard video for conservatives to watch

This is also a poke at fundamentalist Catholicism because the guys with the bowl cuts reminds a lot of the seminarians (young men who are learning to be priests). The Franciscan seminarians use to have that bowl cut and they also live together… the church is responsible for shutting down people’s sexuality however, a lot of these young men are homosexuals and hide it behind their religious position. The crosses she wears, the nun gown too references that she is also under that religious pressure (since she was raised catholic). That’s why she swallows the rosary as well. It all symbolizes the “taming” of the sexuality. I could relate to that as soon as I saw the video because of my catholic upbringing too. So on point.

This one came out mere months before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was repelled in the US army. I feel like that’s worth mentioning when discussing this video.

I honestly thought this was about homosexuality, religion, military, imprisonment, and fashion in WWII. In the beginning of the video you see someone holding up a giant metal shape that kind of looks like a star of David, the symbol Nazis forced Jewish people to wear and another individual holding another shape that looked like an upside down triangle, a shape forced on homosexuals to wear by the Nazis. The military outfits they wore and modeled, looked similar to the Nazis uniforms because they were made by a huge well known fashion company by the name Hugo Boss. So many this Alejandro she mentions is a closeted gay military guy and those other names she mentioned are either his ex lovers he sent to concentration camps to save his neck and gaga is his wife who found out about his sexuality which explains why she says not to call her name or Babe and starts to name his lovers. The religious aspect of it is since Christianity also punished homosexuals and the Catholic Church turned a side eye during the holocaust and didn't do anything to help anyone but themselves, gaga represented them with inverted crosses, with all of that happening, Alejandro repressed himself and his urges and sent innocent men to their deaths. And since the church looks down on BDSM, they used leather and latex to confine his lovers to their beds.
